Media Release: Immediate Release October 15, 2018 Vice Admiral Tim Barrett joins MIAL Board Maritime Industry Australia Ltd (MIAL) is delighted to announce the appointment of Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN (retired) to the MIAL board, after having recently retired following a long and distinguished Navy career, most recently in his role as Chief of Navy. MIAL Chair, David Parmeter said “Recognising the opportunities and mutual benefits that flow from strong ties between the merchant marine and defence, MIAL has for many years prioritised a close working relationship with the Navy, a relationship that was strengthened under the leadership of VADM Tim Barrett”. VADM Barrett has recently retired after a 42-year career in the Royal Australian Navy. He is both a mariner and a naval aviator having served at sea in both capacities. He has served on deployment in many parts of the world including an exchange with the Royal Navy. Ashore he has held significant staff appointments including Deputy Director Air Warfare Development, Director Naval Officer’s Postings and Director General of Defence Force Recruiting. VADM Barrett has also served in prominent command and leadership positions during his career including Commanding Officer 817 Helicopter Squadron, Commanding Officer HMAS Albatross, Commander Australian Navy Aviation Group, Commander Border Protection Command, Commander Australian Fleet and most recently as Chief of Navy, the professional head of the Royal Australian Navy. For his service he has been awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2006, a Member of the Order of Australia in 2009 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014. He served four years as Chief of Navy. VADM Barrett has been a strong advocate in promoting Australia’s maritime strengths in Defence and industry. “Joining the MIAL board makes sense. There are new opportunities in the maritime arena which will demand greater understanding and collaboration between industry and Defence. I hope to contribute to that” he said.
