This activity packet contains 19 activities for grades K-6, and 25 activities for grades 7-12. Key concepts addressed throughout the activity packet include: (1) an overview, the finiteness of natural resources, and waste generation;(2) current waste disposal practices and volume reduction;(3) landfill problems and recycling;(4) methods of reusing, reducing, and recycling for waste management; and (5) waste costs and personal commitments. Each activity includes a "My Little Bit" and a "We Can Make a Difference" section designed to initiate personal commitment. Additional activity sections are objectives, activity in brief, materials, grade level, subjects, time, group size, skills, vocabulary, concepts, procedure, discussion questions, extension, evaluation, and background. An appendix provides a conceptual framework, additional activity suggestions, background information on common packaging materials and solid wastes, general information on landfills, recycling resources, a poem, and a glossary. Acknowledgements Program Developers Jean Crim Eells is the Environmental Education Coordinator for the Hamilton County Conservation Board and also the Director for the Hamilton County Recycling Program. Jean hasten years of experience in environmental education and four years of experience in recycling education. She ison the executive committee for the Iowa Association of Naturalists, and is Vice President ofEducation for the Iowa Recycling Association, and a board member of the Midwest Recycling Association. Eel ls is a long-time member of Iowa Conservation Education Council (ICEC) and has beena pre- senter at numerous teacher/educator workshop over the years. Bachelor of Science in Botany from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake,Iowa Angie Slee Hynek worked as a designer and illustrator for Paragon Needle CraftCorp. in New York for two years. She graduated in elementary education from Buena Vista Collegeand is currently a substitute teacher. She was a writer at the August, 1990, Iowa Clean SWEEPprogram and with Food, Land and People. Angie demonstrated her creativity at these writing sessions,and was contracted to do the illustrations for Iowa Clean SWEEP. Angie resideson a farm near Beaconsfield, Iowa, with her husband and three children. Janey Lynn Swartz, Urbandale, was the principal writer for the K-6 elementarysection of Iowa Clean SWEEP. She was formerly an elementary teacher in Marshalltownand the Sac and Fox Settlement School at Tama, and now works as a freelance writer and OfficeManager for the Iowa Sierra Club Chapter. Janey has been active innumerous other activities including current chairperson Marshall County Conservation Board, past president Marshalltown IzaakWalton League, Uncle Ikes program, and developer of bibliography and how-to materials for children's environmental literature. Prior to moving to Urbandale, she worked asa Media Consultant for AEA 6 and as Assistant Coordi- nator for Project WILD, and Project Learning Tree for the Department of Education. Shewas the writer for the Intermediate sections of the Iowa Developed Energy ActivitySampler (IDEAS). Janey has presented many times at state and national workshops. She isa staff member of the American Wilderness Leadership school. Duane Toomsen, Des Moines, developed the Research Enhancementand Protection (REAP) Conser- vation Education Program grant that servedas the funding mechanism to accomplish a finished product called Iowa Clean SWEEP. He servedas Director of the Project, editor and writer. Duane serves on the ICEC Executive Board, serves as Iowa Coordinator for Project WILD, LearningTree, IDEAS, and numerous other projects. He facilitates environmentaleducation workshops and was active in the development of OUTLOOK; Food, Land and People; ProjectLearning Tree revisions; and other curriculum development projects. Vickie Breeden Anstey, Griswold,was the principal writer for the 7-12 section of Iowa Clean SWEEP. Vickie is a Home Economics teacherat Lewis Central High School, Council Bluffs. She has presented sessions on toxicwaste at ICEC workshops and was the writer of the Home Economics ii 6 section of the Iowa Developed Energy Activity Sampler (IDEAS). Vickie is a facilitator for Project WILD, Project Learning Tree, Ding Darling Project, and the American Wilderness Leadership School. She has presented at numerous ICEC workshops, Midwest Regional Environmental Educa- tion Conferences, wrote for Food, Land, and People; is active in the high school Peer Helper program, and is a trainer for Southwest Iowa Elements of Instruction and numerous other activities. Earlier teaching experience was at Council Bluffs Community School District and Pine Ridge, South Dakota. A special thanks to contributors at the August, 1990, Iowa Clean SWEEP writing conference at the Conservation Education Center, Springbrook.
