NE LHIN Regional Mental Health & Addiction Consultation Group Membership – January 2013 SANDRA BARBIERI Having lived experience with mental illness, Sandra was an inpatient at the North Bay Psychiatric Hospital for three years. In 1996 she became a member of the Patient Council and provided support to patients with her candid ability for compassion and understanding. In 1998 Sandra won a competition for the Peer Support Worker position within the Community Assessment Program (now the Comprehensive Assessment Program). She was important to the success of this team of staff as they successfully placed over 50 long term patients in appropriate and supportive housing in their communities of choice. Sandra was appointed in 2009 as Senior Peer Advisor at the Northeast Mental Health Centre, reporting directly to the CEO. She excelled in this role and strengthened the peer support role in the hospital. She continues in this role at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Sandra’s remarkable ability to relate with patients and staff has truly been a benefit to all. CHRISTINE BLAKE A resident of Manitoulin Island for the past 21 years, Christine is employed as a Registered Social Worker with Health Sciences North, Mental Health & Addictions program, in the addictions field. Christine’s career has been primarily in rural areas of the Sudbury-Manitoulin districts, and previously in Muskoka, where she has developed an awareness and interest in rural service delivery challenges. Her employment history includes both the children’s and adult systems, and more recently, with adult mental health and addiction services. In her current position as a provider of outpatient addiction services, she has the opportunity to work cooperatively with a number of mental health and addiction service providers, within both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities. She is a member and vice-chair of the Manitoulin Addiction and Mental Health Partners’ Committee which has been working towards identification of local gaps in services, as well as opportunities for integration. DIANE BROWN-DEMARCO Diane is Director of Clinical Programs and Services, HANDS The Family Help Network.ca. She has worked in the field of mental health and addictions for 25 years, first as a psychiatric nurse and then in senior management positions within hospital and community based adult and children’s mental health and addictions programs. Of particular interest is the provision of these services within rural and remote northern Ontario communities from Muskoka to the James Bay Coast. Diane is responsible to oversee the clinical programs of a large multi-service community mental health agency which provides child and youth mental health, autism, and developmental services within Nipissing, Muskoka, and Parry Sound Districts and for some programs, across all of Northern Ontario. Page 1 MADELEINE FINLEY Madeleine Finley started working as a social worker in 1987 with Children’s Aid. Since then, she’s worked in mental health and addictions with dual diagnosis clients. Madeleine sits on various Cochrane Hub committees in the mental health and addictions sector as well the Francophone health tables in Kapuskasing and Smooth Rock Falls. She also has personal experience, as a family member, with health care services in the Cochrane Hub, accessing and coordinating services from different HSPs across various sectors on behalf of her loved ones. DR. JEAN-GUY GAGNON Dr. Gagnon is currently the Medical Director of the North Bay Regional Health Centre, Kirkwood Place. He also has a very active private practice in the downtown core of Sudbury. Dr. Gagnon studied medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke after obtaining a degree in Behavioural Neurosciences at Laurentian University. After his MD, Dr. Gagnon specialized in General and Forensic Psychiatry in Sherbrooke. He has special interest and expertise in medical-legal medicine and in the study of the brain and behaviour. SYLVIE GUENTHER Sylvie Guenther is a bilingual Regional Implementation Coordinator with CAMH’s Provincial System Support Program in the Northern Ontario Area. Since 2000, she has worked in health promotion and prevention, knowledge exchange, and has provided provincial leadership in the area of Concurrent Disorders. Sylvie’s recent system building work with CAMH includes the development and implementation of a regional training strategy for screening and referral, and has more recently included working on Service Collaboratives using implementation science principles. Within the Cochrane District, her work is to engage and partner with organizations and system planning groups in an effort to improve services for people living with problems associated mental health and substance use. Sylvie has also developed curriculum and worked as a part- time faculty member with the community college. Sylvie came to CAMH with several years’ experience working with people living with a mental illness and with youth involved in the corrections system. KAREN L REBEIRO GRUHL Karen received a PhD in Interdisciplinary Rural and Northern Health, Laurentian University in 2011. She is currently an Occupational Therapist with Positive Steps, Health Sciences North. Since 2010, Karen has been an Affiliated Investigator, Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research Laurentian University, Sudbury and an Adjunct Professor, Western University (UWO), Health Sciences Department of Occupational Therapy, London ON. Page 2 of 4 DR. ANIL JOSEPH Dr. Joseph is Consultant Psychiatrist with Health Sciences North / Horizon santé-Nord. He is Chief for the Dept of Psychiatry as well as Clinical Director of Acute Inpatient Psychiatry. As well, he is Assistant Professor with NOSM and Adjunct Professor with UWO. Apart from inpatient and outpatient psychiatry services, he provides services to the Assertive Community Treatment Team, Eating Disorders Program, Sudbury Jail and First Nations clinic in Wikwemikong. ELIZABETH LAROCQUE For the past 23 years, Elizabeth has been the Program Director of the Community Alcohol/Drug Assessment Program with Algoma Public Health. Elizabeth has been involved in the health-care field, both front-line and management, for 32 years, with a specific focus on addictions. She has developed a variety of programs and services that have been recognized as innovative and engaging by clients and peers. She developed a needle exchange program with multi-agency involvement and participation as well as developing the first Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program in Sault Ste. Marie. Elizabeth was selected to be a member of the Provincial Methadone Task Force that developed recommendations and standards to the Minister of Health on standards and practices. DR. DAVID MARSH Dr. Marsh is Senior Associate Dean, East Campus and Associate Dean, Community Engagement, Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Dr. Marsh graduated in Medicine from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1992, following prior training in neuroscience and pharmacology. In July 2010, Dr. Marsh joined the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) as Associate Dean, Community Engagement. He brings skills and experience with health care administration, strategic planning, community-based research and social accountability as well as a personal background of Aboriginal ancestry to this role. Prior to moving to NOSM, David served as the Physician Leader, Addiction Medicine with Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health Care and Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Population and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia from 2004-2010. Previously, he held leadership roles at the Addiction Research Foundation and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto from 1996-2003. MARY TASZ A lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, Mary holds a master’s degree in Child and Youth Administration and Masters of Social Work, Advanced Certificate in Couple and Family Therapy. Mary has been with the North East Community Care Access Centre since 2002 and is currently Director of Client Services. She has been an Adjunct Professor, Grand Valley State University Masters of Social Work Program since 2005. Page 3 of 4 KAREN ROWE Karen has an undergraduate degree from University of Western Ontario, a teaching certificate from McGill University and a Master of Education degree Nipissing University. She is a former teacher, principal, program principal, superintendent. She has been with the Ministry of Education for last four years; three as a senior specialist on secondment. She is currently a permanent public servant in the role of Student Achievement Officer. Karen was raised in Sudbury and lives in Haileybury. MARY ELLEN SZADKOWSKI Mary Ellen is a registered nurse, consultant and community developer who has worked in nursing education, health planning and consulting. Her interests in mental health include eating disorders and consumer and family support. In 2009 she served on the MOHLTC Consumer Partnership Group, which contributed to the report Respect, Recovery, Resilience: Recommendations for Ontario’s Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. She also served as co-chair of the Steering Committee for the integration of mental health and addiction services in Algoma. Currently Mary Ellen is the Manager of Clinical Research and Mental Health at Group Health Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. DEBBI PEGAHMAGABOW Debbi has been a registered nurse for 27 years with clinical specialty in mental health and addictions. Debbi has continued to work privately as a clinical
