Renee Sherrer • Bring Your Sewing Machine and the Things That You

BEGINNING SEWING II Renee Sherrer Join us for this continuation class and build on the skills you learned in Beginning Sewing 1! We'll make a series of pillows and, with each pillow, learn new skills - lapped zipper, bound buttonhole, darts, piping, patch pockets, sewing curved seams, topstitching and much more. By course end, you'll have a set of lovely throw pillows for your home and a new skill set! EQUIPMENT: Bring your sewing machine AND the things that you need to use it, like: o the manual o the power cord o foot pedal o bobbin case and empty bobbin(s) (at least 2) o sewing machine needles - size 12 or 14 o thread to match your fabric - cotton/poly blend . NOT buttonhole, upholstery, nylon, metallic, embroidery, silk or rayon o regular sewing foot and zipper foot o needle threader (if you need it) Reading glasses/glasses for close work (if you need them) Scissors for fabric Stitch ripper C-Thru ruler (clear) with 1/8” markings Pins (metal or glass head - no plastic head pins) Yardstick Marking tool Chalk-o-liner is preferred (comes in white, yellow, blue and pink). MATERIALS FOR PILLOWS: 3 pillow forms that are 18” square Fabric: Get fabric that is sturdy, light-weight upholstery fabric, home decorator fabric, canvas, denim, heavy cotton. o Pillow #1, get 5/8 yard of one fabric and 3/8 yard of a contrast fabric o Pillow #2, get 5/8 yard of one fabric and we'll use scraps from the first contrast fabric (Pillow #1) o Pillow #3, get 5/8 yard of one fabric and 5/8 yard of another contrast fabric o IF you want all three pillows to be a "suite" of pillows - Get 2 yards of one fabric and 1 1/8 yards of a contrast fabric. THAT will cover everything. *Note: I usually ask for just a little more fabric that you will actually need so we can trade among students to create interesting color mixes. ALSO, we’ll do something fun with the extra fabric. NOTIONS: 2 1/4 yards of piping (get 3/16” or 5/32") in size. Don't get "FAT" piping. Zipper - get 3 polyester all-purpose zippers, each one at least 20" or 22" long, to match your fabric. Do not buy metallic zippers, invisible zippers, or purse/jeans/jacket zippers. Button - get a large, decorative button - keep in mind, if you are going to lay your head on this pillow, the button should not be one that would “catch or tangle” in your hair. Thread: Get two spools o Spool to match your pillow fabric o Spool to match your contrast fabrics for the reverse applique’ pillow Updated 12/5/16 .
