Built over the ruins of a roman fortress, the "Cité" of Carcassonne became famous during the crusades against the heretics, when the city was one of the headquarters of Occitan Cathars. In August 1209 the crusading army of Simon de Montfort forced its citizens to surrender. Nowadays, behind the walls composed by a double ring of ramparts and 52 towers and barbicans, the castle sits overlooking the surrounding area. The Old City offers to visitors an intricate network of narrow streets with small terraces, nice cafés, restaurants and hotels... The Bastide "Saint Louis" was born in 1245. During the Hundred Years’ War, the Black Prince destroyed a great part of the Bastide due to a big fire in 1355. Later in the 17th century, the Bastide would become a City dedicated to draperies. In the 19th century cultural life in the city became very rich thanks to the profits from the wine trade. Nowadays, the walker will appreciate the Bastide Saint Louis with its numerous private mansions, its churches and its spice market. Near the Bastide, the Canal du Midi built in the 17th century to link the Atlantic and Mediterranean, is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and flows through a region steeped in history. A boating holiday on the canal du Midi is a unique experience to find "serenity".
