Scaling up preventive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. 2. Strengthening health systems and workers. 3. Supporting children impacted by COVID-19 through education, child protection, food and livelihoods. 4. Collaborating and advocating to ensure children are protected. Despite the challenges caused by COVID-19, WVZ continues to distribute emergency lifesaving humanitarian food supplies in Western and Southern Zambia. Food distribution in Gwembe district, in the Southern province of Zambia, one of the most affected by drought classified as Integrated Phase Classification IPC 4. WVZ has introduced interventions at all distribution points to prevent and respond to the coronavirus. WVZ with support from USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) is responding to the humanitarian emergency by responding to immediate humanitarian needs, while also supporting interventions to build community resilience to mitigate and respond to future shocks. The 2019/2020 WVZ drought response strategy focuses on providing timely life-saving humanitarian assistance to 557,031 drought affected people in 27 districts across Zambia, including 63,036 Registered Children. The drought response is supporting the delivery of agricultural and other livelihoods assistance to drought-affected populations in Western Province’s Sioma District. Over 2,200 farming households are targeted under the $100,000 intervention in Sioma. The humanitarian response is focused on building resilience amid the dry conditions. To help mitigate the spread of the pandemic the WVZ Board of Directors, partners from the private sector and friends of WVZ united in resource mobilization efforts to ensure that pupils have access to PPE, adequate hygiene and sanitation facilities to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.
