st Annual 91Report 2016-17 SHRI RAM COLLEGE OF COMMERCE Sir Shri Ram (1884-1963) “Education is the key which is going to unlock the door to our greatness...” Lala Shri Ram, the enigmatic visionary behind the institution, was born on April 27, 1884. The first son of Madan Mohan Lal and Chando Devi, Lala Shri Ram completed his education in Delhi. In 1909, the 25 years old Lala Shri Ram joined DCM. He possessed an analytical mind, an infinite capacity for work and a knack for human relations. During his life, Lala Shri Ram's main emphasis was on vocational, technical and women's education. As far back in 1920, he had decided to conduct the first experiment in vocation-oriented education by founding the Commercial Education Trust. The first school taken over by Commercial Education Trust was the Commercial High School. Commercial High School was raised in 1926 to the standard of an Intermediate College, in 1930 to a degree college and in 1934 to a post-graduate College. In 1942, Lala Shri Ram became the Chairman of the Governing Body of the College. By the year 1948, although comparatively young among the colleges of Delhi University, the Commercial College had the maximum enrolment possible under the University rules. In 1949, it was proposed to rename the College as 'Shri Ram College of Commerce' but it took two years to implement it due to the reticence of Lala Shri Ram. Lala Shri Ram's association with the College continued till 1962, when because of failing health, he resigned. His health continued to deteriorate and he passed away on January 11, 1963. On the death of Lala Shri Ram, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India said, “He was not only a great industrialist but helped many good causes. His contributions to education are memorable”. 91st Annual Report 2016-17 Hon'ble Mr. Prakash Javadekar, Mr. Rajat Sharma, Mr. Ajay S Shriram, distinguished members of the Governing Body, illustrious alumni, guests, students, dear colleagues and friends; My warm greetings to all on the 91st Annual Day of the College. We are fortunate to have in our midst Mr. Prakash Javadekar, the Minister of HRD, Government of India. On 5th July 2016, he was elevated as Cabinet Minister and was assigned HRD portfolio. Being a member of Rajya Sabha (Council of States), he has been representing state of Madhya Pradesh from June 2014. He has also worked as Minister of State for Parliament Affairs until November 2014. Recently, he inaugurated the Smart India 'Hackathon' 2017 final round where he focused on the role of Innovation and said it is the only way for Sustainable prosperity of the country. He is the Chief Patron for this initiative. He constantly emphasizes on improvement of quality of education at all levels which is also the thrust of our Government. We heartedly welcome you Sir. Mr.Rajat Sharma, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of India TVis one of the India's most prominent Journalist. He is distinguished alumnus of this college and is famous for his “AAP ki Adaalat”. We welcome you sir. On 91st Annual Day of the College, we must salute the foresight of our founder, Sir Shri Ram, who understood almost a century ago the role of wealth creation and management in nation building. Deep down, he realized the importance of moving a step at a time, and therefore started so modestly in 1926. That modest beginning has now brought us to this august day. When I take a cursory look at SRCC 2016-17, a notable event happened where the Hon'ble President of India, Mr.Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the Ninety Years Celebration of the founding of Shri Ram College of Commerce at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on February 20, 2017.The distinguished guests at the ceremony included Mr. Arun Jaitley, Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Eminent Alumnus and Member, SRCC Governing Body, Mr. Vijay Goel, MOS for Youth Affairs & Sports, and an Eminent Alumnus, Justice Arjan K. Sikri, Supreme Court of India, & Member, SRCC Governing Body, Prof. Yogesh K. Tyagi, Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, the President highlighted the importance of learning that reflects a realistic and practical approach to life in general. He noted that for decades, SRCC has met the essential requirement of connecting education to the needs of an emerging nation and also developed the livelihood and professional skills in the fields of business and economics. He also remarked that the vision of the College Founder, Sir Shri Ram, to create an institution that would train young minds to manage the needs of industry, business and economic administration has been fulfilled comprehensively. It is really proud thing for me to be associated with the College that has been accredited A+ by National Accreditation and Assessment Council. NAAC Peer Team consisting four distinguished academicians visited our College in the month of August, 2016. The process began with a presentation highlighting the features of the college followed by a video providing an overall sketch of the College and its facilities. This was followed by a presentation by Dr. RachnaJawa, Coordinator, IQACon Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) highlighting the various quality aspects of the collegeand the visit to the different functional units of the college. The visit ended with an 'exit meeting' where Chairman of the NAAC Peer team, Prof. Ashok Aima, shared his observations followed by a few suggestions for the College. SRCC has been awarded A+rating with CGPA of 3.65 out of 4 and is highest among all colleges of University of Delhi so far. I feel delighted to share that out of 7 parameters NAAC team awarded CGPA of 4 out of 4 in 3 parameters. A Pledge of Excellence ceremony was organised in the Auditorium of the College where, Mr. Ajay Shriram, Chairman, Governing Body, was the Chief Guest of the function, who congratulated the college for its stellar ratings while lauding the efforts of the College NAAC team behind the achievement. He also highlighted the areas of further development for 3 Annual Report 2016-17 the institution while providing a road map for the achievement for the same. This was followed by administering the pledge of excellence to the audience pledging their energies and hardwork to the achievement of the highest order of quality for the College. It gives me pleasure to note that our College in collaboration with the University of Kigali, Rwanda and Namibia University of Science and Technology, Namibia organized a two day International Conference on Advances in Business and Information Technology & Doctoral Colloquium at Kigali, Rwanda (Africa) on March 1-2, 2017, where Dr. Anil Kumar, Associate Professor, SRCC, and Conference Co-Chair delivered key note address on Corporate Governance in family business.The Conference saw participation from various countries across the globe. SRCC Global Millennium Summit, first-of-its-kind International Summit was organized by the students of SRCC at Dubai in March 2017. The theme of the Summit was 'Future of the Millennium' which entailed speaker sessions, panel discussions, workshops and competitions centering on Entrepreneurship, Banking, Smart cities and Technology. It saw participation from over two hundred student delegates from 20+ countries and provided a platform for the future leaders to engage with each other. The summit was inaugurated by His Excellency Sheikh NahayanMabarak Al Nahayan, the Minister of Culture & Knowledge Development, UAE, along with Shri Vijay Goel, Hon'ble Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, India. The Summit was graced by esteemed speakers like Mr. AshishThakkar,Mr. KeshavBansal, Ms. SumathiVasudev, Mr. Sanjay Kumar among others. The Chief Guest for the closing ceremony was H.E. Navdeep Singh Suri, Ambassador of India to UAE. Our College introduced few new societies namely 'Wings of Fire', 'Vittshalla', 'Atman'. The members and associates of SRCC-Wings of Fire have come up with flying colours with many getting All India Ranks in recent results of professional examinations. It organised events like 'SRCC CA Confluence' and 'Humans of CA' concept that shares the stories of individuals in the profession which provide valuable insights and inspiration. 'Vittshala' has been started with the intention of betterment of people belonging to different strata of the society. It has a dedicated team which works towards developing financially capable citizens through its projects. 'Atman: The Mind Body and Soul Club' is a spiritual initiative taken by the faculty and students of SRCC. The objective of this club is to explore, experience and practice the depth of the statement. The college has always encouraged students to have their own publications in national and international Journals and to promote this the college has launched a Student's Journal 'Strides'. It is an annual journal exclusively launched to publish academic research papers and articles of students on contemporary topics and issues. Students have always been the backbone of SRCC. Their constant efforts and perseverance has enabled SRCC to retain its position on top, thus maintaining its course to becoming the college of global choice. Be it an academic pursuit, or taking part in a beauty pageant or showing their strength in the sport arena our students have come out with flying colours. Their intelligence and hard work has enabled SRCC to retain its position on top, thus maintaining its course to becoming the College of Global Choice. Let us put our hands together for our students whose achievements we applaud with great pride. It's my great pleasure to announce that Pramod Abraham is the overall topper of the GBO Programme.
