The Shire of Leonora is now the proud owner of an Ed Seiler upright piano which was kindly donated by Mary-Anne Kenworthy. Ed Seiler is a name synonymous with grand and upright pianos. Eduard Seiler, the company’s founder, began making pianos in 1849 in Leignitz, which was then a part of Prussia. By 1923 the company was producing up to 3,000 pianos per year and was the largest piano manufacturer in Eastern Europe. The piano originally was in a hotel in Leonora and came out from Fremantle in the late 1880s on the back of a camel. Locals remember the piano being in the Central Hotel. If anyone could enlighten us with information on the history of the piano while it was in Leonora, please call into the Shire Office, we would love to hear from you. As you can see in the photograph, it now takes pride of place in the Shire of Leonora’s Information Centre. Once the Leonora Museum is established it will be moved to that location close by. 2. With the combination of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the influenza season on the horizon, there really has nev- er been a better time to quit smoking. We know that smoking can put you at greater risk of getting chest infections and influenza, and emerging evidence suggests that smoking can be a significant risk factor for more severe symptoms of COVID-19. Studies have suggested that if you contract COVID-19 and you smoke, you are up to two and half times more likely to be admitted to an intensive care ward or require life support.
