Now in its 11th season, it’s hard to imagine the team being named anything OTHER than Condors. But when the team moved into the brand-spanking new Cen- tennial Garden (now Rabobank Arena), the team changed its name from the Fog, and coming up with the new name was an interesting process. “The two primary criteria probably boiled down to being unique from other sports teams and be- ing indigenous to the area. We have satisfi ed both of those and expect the name and logo to be very popular,” said Condors Owner Jonathan Fleisig in a press release dated July 7, 1998. Curiously, in a classifi ed document recently uncovered by Nightly Notes, dating Dec. 30, 1997, the listed fi nalists for the team name were the Brontos, Valley Bears and OilCats. Listed under the “OTHERS” heading is Condors, as well as various oil rig terms such as Roughnecks. It happened so long ago that it’s a faint memory for many. Some of the biggest Condors fans in attendance tonight were just a twinkle in their daddy’s eye when it actually happened. But one guy in town that defi nitely remembers is Bakersfi eld Californian writer Mike Griffi th, who has covered pro hockey the entire step of the way here in town. When it got out that it was a fi nalist, it got leaked,” recalls Griffi th. “The Fog booster club caught word of the Brontosaurus being the new team name and it wasn’t a hit. They sold pins with a brontosaurus wearing a hockey jersey with a big slash through it. I imagine these are col- lector’s items now,” he says with a laugh, holding said pins in his hand. “How much fun would I have had if the team was named that?” Griffi th says, pointing out that the brontosaurus is a massive, plant-eating, slow-moving “fodder for ole’ T-Rex… dinner, lunch, midnight snack… They used to serve up Bronto Burgers on The Flintstones.” Griffi th’s opinion hasn’t really changed much since Feb. 20, 1998, when in a Californian column he penned: “The image of purple Barneys is nauseating to most everyone over the age of fi ve.” “It’s a cool promotion now though,” he concedes. Indeed it is. And the Brontos logo you see tonight is almost identical to one of the preliminary mock-ups for the team logo, would it have been named such. So this truly is a trip down Con- dors memory lane. Ahhh….. What could have been!
