Our Build a Better World incentive-based summer reading program is just the beginning; one part of a continuum of educational programming that keeps kids productively engaged, safe and entertained during the summer months. Summer at the library is all about discovery and the joy of learning. This summer – in addition to our usual abundance of quality youth programming and activities – we are offering more than 75 free summer camps designed to help students build STEM, literacy, communication and other valuable skills that translate to success in the classroom and beyond. We have camps on everything from constructing and programming robots, designing web-based video games, creating optical illusions and magic to fitness, teen entrepreneurship, conducting science experiments and exploring creativity through collaborative art. Young people will be actively engaged in hands-on learning and having fun. We are also expanding our summer lunch program from 10 to 12 branch locations. Many children in our communities depend on the stability and nutrition offered by school lunch programs. During the summer months, their access to healthy food may be very limited. We are partnering with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank to help fill the void by offering free, nutritious summer lunches to children ages 18 and under. Last summer, our 10 summer lunch locations received nearly 15,000 visits from hungry children. By expanding the program to 12 branches, we will serve the needs of even more. I invite you to check out the Featured Youth Programs section of this magazine for a complete list of our summer lunch locations and summer camps. We have so much quality youth programming to offer, but the summer of 2017 may ultimately go down as the summer of the author at Cuyahoga County Public Library. We have an unbelievable slate of more than 20 nationally recognized and best-selling authors lined up. We are partnering with Cleveland State University’s inaugural AHA! Festival to bring Jonathan Safran Foer to town for two events on June 8. On June 12, our Parma-Snow Branch will host a visit from Dennis Lehane, author of the best-sellers Mystic River, Shutter Island and Live by Night – all of which have been adapted into major films. Then on July 16, our South Euclid-Lyndhurst Branch will host Fiona Barton, author of The Widow, one of the most talked about books of 2016. These are just a few of the amazing authors we have in store for you this summer. Check out our Meet the Authors section for a complete list of events. Our author events take readers “beyond the book” to learn how their favorite writers find inspiration, conduct research and develop characters, settings and plot. I, for one, can’t wait. It is going to be a summer to remember.
