THORACIC SURGERY, SWEDISH CANCER INSTITUTE Home Soft Diet Instructions Following Esophageal/Stomach Surgery Note: This diet is intended to be an extension of the clear and full liquid diet and you may also eat anything off those diet recommendations. We are recommending a soft diet for you. This Fruits and vegetables: soft diet is intended to ease the movement of food Steamed/cooked vegetables without skins, mashed through the temporarily swollen areas of the Fruit juices and nectars esophagus and stomach. You should remain on Prepared baby food this diet until you are cleared by your surgeon to go back to a normal diet. Applesauce Ripe mashed banana A soft diet includes foods that are very soft and easy to chew. Foods should be wet and in small pieces Steamed/cooked fruit without skins like pears or so that they won’t get stuck in your esophagus when apples, mashed you swallow. You can puree foods in a blender if you Soft avocado need to make them soft and wet enough to swallow. Starches: You should avoid uncooked vegetables and hard Overcooked (very soft) pasta or noodles with fruit as well as solid foods like cheese. Avoid foods cream or red sauce that are hard to break down with a blender or your teeth. Mushy pancakes that are moistened with butter and syrup Avoid starchy foods that can get stuck or ball up in Pureed potatoes and moistened with gravy your esophagus, like sticky rice, thick bread crusts and sticky muffins.
