Chair Re-Upholstery Supplies and Instructions Taught by Ollie Doyle For your first class, please bring: • Your chair • Scissors • Tack Puller or Upholstery staple puller (not the office supply kind) • Pliers Many students choose to wait to purchase fabric until the first class, as Ollie will give you advice on the amount to purchase and that may save you a costly mistake. If you have already purchased your fabric, please bring it with you. You will need it for the second session. Other supplies, such as foam, tack strips, additional fabric, trims, nailheads, etc, will probably be needed as the class goes on, but it is best to wait and consult with Ollie on the needs for your individual project. All supplies purchased from Pacific Fabrics are eligible for a 10% student discount – please show your receipt from your class sign-up to be eligible for this discount at the register. Other Notes: • To make the most of class time, you may wish to do some cutting and sewing at home. Ollie will instruct you on what you might get done at home. Here are some guidelines for your homework: • All seams are ½”. • Do not cut pattern pieces unless instructed to do so. If you are using a piece of original upholstery as a pattern piece, take out all original stitching, press as flat as possible, lay on the fabric with right sides facing up, mark around the piece and cut. If the edge was tacked, add three inches. • As you cut your fabric, if it has a pattern or nap (direction the fabric looks best in, common in velvets) be sure to cut your pieces out all in the same direction. When making welting (the fabric covered cord used as trim on many upholstery projects) it does not need to be cut on the bias. Use a zipper foot to sew as close to the cording as possible. If using a 5/32” welt, you will be cuttings strips of 1 9/16”. If thicker, you will need to cut thicker strips – Ollie can give good directions on this. Cutting straight, even strips is made much easier using a rotary cutter, mat and clear ruler. If you are uncomfortable sewing your own boxed cushion, Pacific Fabrics offers Box Cushion Construction classes. If you have any additional questions, please call the store. Enjoy your class!!!!
