The mighty Brahmaputra – Jamuna started falling. More low lying areas in some districts are likely to inundate by next 24-48 hours. FLOOD, RAINFALL AND RIVER SITUATION SUMMARY (as on September 3, 2008) Flood Outlook • Flood situation in the north and north-eastern part of the country is likely to improve further in the next 24- 48 hrs. • The mighty Brahmaputra –Jamuna started falling at all the monitoring stations and is likely to improve further in the next 24-48 hrs. • The confluence of both the rivers (the Padma at Goalundo & Bhagyakul) will continue rising at moderate rate for next 2-3 days. • More low lying areas in the districts of Chandpur, Serajganj, Tangail, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Dohar & Nawabganj of Dhaka district, Shibganj & Sadar of Chapai-Nawabganj district is likely to inundate by next 24-48 hours. The Disaster Management Information Centre is the information hub of the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management for risk reduction, hazard early warnings and emergency response and recovery activities Page 1 of 7 Situation Report Actions Taken • It has been decided to allot 50000 MT rice/food grains to inundated 15 districts (Gaibandha, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Sariatpur, some parts of Dhaka, some parts of Chapainawabganj, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Madaripur, Bogra, Tangail and Manikganj) under Test Relief (TR) programme. Under this programme inundated and affected road, mosque, madrasa, orphanage, school/college, open fields and other public welfare infrastructures/institutions will be reconstructed/renovated. • 4700 MT GR rice and BDT 7,000,000 as GR cash have been allotted to all 64 districts of the country. • All respective DRROs are advised to send latest situations over emails to [email protected], [email protected] and by fax at +880 2 8851615 and +880 2 9890854. Water entered into 4 unions (Sundorpur, Narayanpur, Char Bakdanga & Alatoli) of sadar upazila. 120 households, 60 hector crops, 4 mosques, 2 schools and 1 bazaar affected. DC is on visit and observation the situation. All necessary precautionary steps have been taken and all relevant personnel are kept alert. Sirajganj Water entered into 1 union of sadar upazila and low laying area of sadar pouroshova due to breach in some parts of an embankment cum road. Low laying areas of 5 upazilas inundated. 22 unions, 38087 people of 7892 families, 4540 households partially, 58 houses totally, 23.5 km roads partially, 2 km road fully, 15 educational institutions partially and 1 culvert partially damaged. 12 flood shelters opened where 10770 persons took place. Situation may deteriorate if water level is continuing to rise. All necessary precautionary steps have been taken and all relevant personnel are kept alert. Bogra Water entered into households of 250 families of Vandarbari, Sohrabari, Shimulbari, Baniajan, Roghunathpur, Pukuria & Boishakhichar of Dhunot upazila. 10 families took shelter on flood control embankment. Chaluabari, Hateysherpur, Kajla, Sariakandi, Karnibari, Chandanaish, Jamalpur and Bohail unions of Sariakandi upazila partially inundated. Few people along with their livestock took shelter on embankment and high land of CLP. 700 houses and remarkable area of “aman” of Tekani Chukainagar union of Sonatola upazila was inundated. Water started to recede. Overall situation is improving. Nilphamari The Tista is flowing below danger level and no flood is prevailed over the district yet. Communication with upazilas is well established. 30 homesteads (kacha houses) damaged due to sudden tornado in Itakhola & Tupamari union of Sadar upazila in between 9:00 pm and 9:30 pm on August 31, 2008. Distributed by district administration: 1 MT GR rice, BDT 42,000 GR cash and BDT 8,000 for household. In stock: 49 MT GR rice, BDT 8,000 as GR cash, and BDT 42,000 for household. Lalmonirhat Water level is receding and flowing below danger level. Due to sudden rising of water, 1100 household of Kulaghat and Mogolhat of Sadar upazila inundated, but at present water went down from these households. 11 MT GR rice distributed among the affected families, 10 kg for each family. In Goddimari union of Hatibandha upazila, another 13 families affected and 50 acres crops inundated as 300 feet in front side of Tista flood bypass breached. Presently the water level is decreasing. 20 kg GR rice and BDT 500 as GR cash have been distributed among each of affected 13 families. Gaibandha Water level rose due to heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream and the Bramhaputra & the Ghagot are flowing above danger level. Few low laying areas of 4 upazilas inundated. No information of fresh flood received as rate of water level rising decreased. All necessary precautionary steps have been taken and all relevant personnel are kept alert. Kurigram Water level of the Tista decresed though the river is flowing above danger mark. In 54 unions of 9 upazilas, 1258 families totally and 29471 families partially affected. Total number of affected people - 13710 totally, 77183 partially, crops – 39.748 hectors totally, households – 3971 totally, 18890 partially, earthen road – 232 km, carpeted road – 7 km, embankment – 8 km, culvert – 2 totally, 25 partially, educational institution – 7 totally, 26 partially, religious institutions – 5 totally, 3 partially. 200 people took shelter in 3 educational institutions. All relevant personnel have been advised to take necessary actions. Besides 125 households damaged due to sudden tornado in Omor Majid union of Razarhat upazila on August 30, 2008. No flood is prevailed and water didn’t enter inside households but due to sudden rise of water level, few areas of planted “aman” inundated at char areas of the Tista. Water from crop fields went away and no damage has been reported. The flood situation is normal. But due to river erosion, 42 acres of crops field and 168 meter of carpeted road washed out. 210 households transferred to safer place from river bank area to avoid further damage. Rajshahi The Padma is flowing below danger level. Water didn’t enter into any area. No flood is prevailed. Situation is normal. Dhaka Water level crossed danger mark and is continuing to rise. Very few low laying areas of Dohar and Nawabganj upzila inundated. In Bandura union of Nawabganj upazila, 5 families totally affected due to extreme current of Sadapur canal. These affected families took shelter in relatives’ house or on ring embankment.
