TFor so many Sandroydians the year has absolutely flown by and when they take time to reflect on how much they have achieved, they are astonished as to how it has all been packed in. For our Year 8 leavers, the summer term is a time of important exams, followed by a celebration of achieving their goals before enjoying their remaining few weeks at Sandroyd. During these last weeks, there is much excitement about the next stage, yet also the inevitable sadness about leaving behind firm friendships and a whole raft of experiences. Some of our Year 8 leavers joined the Walled Garden aged just 2! The reality, of course, is that many of these friendships will last a lifetime, and the memories and experiences will be cherished forever. As a school, we would not be doing our job properly if our leavers were not excited and ready for the next stage of their schooling. As Headmaster, I was so proud of them all, not just for passing their Common Entrance, but the style with which they did this and producing such excellent results across the board. Every candidate entered the exam week with their own goals, but particular congratulations are due to those who achieved a top ten Common Entrance result at Harrow, Sherborne, Marlborough and Bryanston. Indeed Ivor Davies achieved second place overall in the common Entrance results at Bryanston. But as the end of one era draws to a close, it heralds the beginning of another. The start of the academic year brings with it new beginnings for all children – whether a new school, new form or new year. With these new beginnings come plenty of fresh challenges and opportunities. This new academic year also brings so many new opportunities for Sandroyd. Our new timetable is designed to balance academic, sporting and the Arts curriculums. Our new longer lessons, earlier in the day, will enhance learning in the classroom. With building work now well underway for the new Art block and Dance Studio we have an ambitious programme in the performing Arts. We are also launching our new ‘Strive’ programme which identifies, and then develops a raft of qualities sought by senior schools, universities and the world of work. From this term, the ‘Strive’ programme has become an integral part of every child’s curriculum at Sandroyd. An astonishing 50 different activities are offered during daily timetabled ‘Strive’ sessions. The success of Strive is that it is not just at the very heart of our school motto, but that it is at the very heart of all we do at Sandroyd. Its principles are embedded in everyday school life, from promoting good manners to our approach in the classrooms; in delivering our best performances on the stage and on the games field. I am incredibly excited about this new academic year and the opportunities that arise from it. We have a team of staff who are unbelievably ambitious for each and every child at Sandroyd and I hope as you read through the pages of this edition of the Sandroydian you will gain both pride in what has been achieved this summer, as well as an excitement for the opportunities that arise at Sandroyd from fresh beginnings.
