PA 5880 Global Cities Spring, 2015 Dar es Salaam, Tanzania In this course we examine issues related to rapid urbanization in sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The rapid growth rates of many African cities present a range of public policy and planning challenges for both local and national governments. In Dar es Salaam, we will explore: • Growth patterns and dynamics • Informalization of the housing sector • Environmental sustainability • Slum upgrading initiatives • Economic development • Community development initiatives • Informal economic activity • The legacy of colonialism in the built • Infrastructure challenges related to environment roads and transport, water and sewage HHH Students, 2011 HHH Students, 2012 PA 5880 Global Cities, 2 cr. Professor Edward Goetz Week 1 (May 18-22) The first week will consist of an intensive class-room based experience to take place in Minneapolis. Topics include: • Urbanization trends in Africa • Governance and urban planning challenges of African urbanization • The informal sector in African cities: housing and income. • History and development of Tanzania and Dar es Salaam. Week 2 and beyond (May 23-June 1) We travel to Dar es Salaam, arriving Sunday morning, May 24. We meet each morning with faculty from the University of Dar es Salaam and from Ardhi University. Afternoons are set aside for site visits to various parts of the city to observe first-hand examples of the topics covered in the morning sessions, including slum-upgrading projects, informal markets, the Port, and downtown. There will also be some evening activities planned as well. At the end of the week we travel by ferry to Zanzibar to visit the island’s Stone Town area. From Zanzibar we return to Dar es Salaam and then home. Alternatively, you may arrange additional sightseeing activities (Mount Kilimanjaro, safari expeditions, the beaches of Zanzibar) and stay in Africa as long as you wish. Register for PA 5880 for the spring semester. A course fee applies. .
