Kids who choose not to use consistently indicate that their parents are the motivating factor in being substance free. Make spending time with your children a priority. ■ Learn all you can about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug trends among youth. The Commission sponsors parent trainings throughout the year. We also maintain a lending library of books and brochures. There are several good web sites that we can recommend including www.antidrug.com. ■ Monitor and supervise your children. Know where they are, who they are with, and what they are doing. Get to know their friends and the parents of their friends. Don’t forget to monitor access to video games, the internet, email, social networking sites, and cell phone use. ■ Talk to your children about your values and expectations around alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. This is not a once and done conversation but an ongoing dialog throughout their childhood. It is never too early to begin this discussion. ■ Encourage your children to become involved in extra-curricular activities. There are many ways to engage your child in positive activities such as athletics, community service, hobbies, music, drama, faith-based programs, and scouting. ■ Do not participate in or condone use. Buying tobacco or alcohol for underage youth is against the law. Your job is to be the parent and not their friend. ■ Model appropriate behavior yourself. Examine your own attitude toward and use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and make changes as needed. If you need assistance, the Commission can help.
