Side 2 af 6 Karolinelund Karolinelund has gone through tremendous changes the past years, from being the amusement park of the city to, now, being a cultural park in the centre of Aalborg. The park reopened as a city park operated and owned by Aalborg Municipality. In Karolinelund, there is beautiful graffiti, which testifies to a diverse city culture. Possibillties in Karolinelund: • Parties at Fridays Concerts with both well-known and less known names, who fill up the garden with a festive atmosphere, are well-at- tended by the citizens of the city. • On sunny days, you see that the city-dwellers often leave their apartments in mid- town and meet up on the soft grass in Karolinelund. • Joggers frequently use the park for running, where various challenges lie at their feet, which can be utilised as extra strength exercises during the sprint. • Skaters hang out by the ramp, and the flat asphalt makes it ideal for putting on the roller-skates or hopping on the skateboard. • City gardens called “Aalborg gardens”, which are Aalborg Municipality’s offer to the citizens of the city regarding loan of areas for gardening flowers and vegetables. Side 4 af 6 Aalborghus Castle Aalborghus Castle was built by Christian III of Denmark over a period of 16 years and was completed in 1555. It was built as a fortification, however, it proved to be use- less as a fortification as it was not possible to supply the personnel with clean drinking water in case of a siege. Accordingly, the castle was instead utilised as a head- quarters for the King’s vassal in North Jutland. Today, it is used by the State Administration. There is no public access to the buildings, however, you can go to the courtyard and the surrounding grounds, where the original ramparts are visible. It is possible to visit the case- mates and the dungeon in the summer. C. W. Obels Plads C.W. Obel’s Tobacco factory was es- tablished in 1787. The company moved in 1898 upon a fire, after which the abandoned court be- came C.W. Obels Plads. In the summer, it is full of life as the ca- fés move out to the town square, whereas in the winter, it is trans- formed to a large skating rink, where everyone can ice skate as they like. It is possible to rent the ice skates. Studenterhuset Studenterhuset in Aalborg is the country’s oldest one of its kind. The reading room has 130 seats. Studenterhuset is managed by volunteers in Aalborg as well as four permanently em- ployed people, who handle the daily adminis- trative tasks.
