2020 Introductions Catalog 10702 Seaman Road • Hebron, IL 60034 • USA TEL: (815) 648-2788 TOLL FREE: (800) 648-2788 www.intrinsicperennialgardens.com January 2020 2019 was a great year for Intrinsic Introductions. Our Rudbeckia x ‘American Gold Rush’ won the All American After 19 years breeding Pennisetum ‘Love and Rockets’ is a dwarf red flowering fountain grass close in size and Selection award just in time to meet the growing supply chain including, four tissue culture labs and URC stature to ‘Hameln’. It combines nicely with the dark green foliage with red tips. ‘Yellow Ribbons’ our 2019 availability from Darwin Perennials. In 2020 we will begin to trial another Rudbeckia with yellow flowers and intro looked great at every trial site I saw it in. Next year we will introduce a broad leaved form with yellow begin to license Rudbeckia x ‘Glitters like Gold’ in July and at the same time our 2008 intro Polemonium x foliage. Think ‘All Gold’ for full sun. Salvia nemorosa ‘Sixteen Candles’ PPAF has less branched upright flowers. ‘Heaven Scent’ will become our fifth Proven Winners perennial. The pink color flowers gets backed up by purple and violet calyxs and stems adding depth and contrast. Sedum Our top selling introductions were Rudbeckia x ‘American Gold Rush’, Allium x ‘Windy City’, Andropogon album ‘Nerds’ is a great groundcover and has interesting orange to russet red color in winter into spring. Sedum gerardii ‘Blackhawks’ and ‘Red October’, and Penstemon digitalis ‘Pocahontas’ which sold out for the sexangulare ‘Yellowstone’ PPAF is a more robust and bright improvement on ‘Golddigger’. I’m pleased Sedum first time since we introduced it in 2012 and will be featured on QVC along with Rudbeckia x ‘American x ‘Pride and Joy’ PPAF will become our fourth Proven Winners perennial. It’s a deeper pink sport of ‘Pure Joy’ Gold Rush’, which is really exciting. and has the same great dome shaped habit, 1’ tall by 15-20” wide. Finally, Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Queen of Diamonds’ was selected for extra clean, dark green foliage. After the soft pink flowers in late summer, the As far as new Introductions, 2020 will be a reserved year as we focus on supply chain for already current intros. upright 4’ plants stand chocolate brown all winter long. Amsonia x ‘Bases Loaded’ is our most refined halfway type foliage yet. Extra dark green foliage shows off the heavy clusters of light blue on 18-24” stems. Reserved growth keeps these 30” plus plants wider than tall. Our 6th annual ornamental Grasses day, Friday September 18th, 2020. Come see our ornamental grasses at And we have lot more Amsonia hits on deck where that came from. Bouteloua gracilis ‘Honey Blonde’ PPAF is their peak. a larger Grama grass selected for uniform growth, good vigor and upright stems standing up to winter. Dianthus x ‘Fuchsia Fire’ PPAF is the first plant introduction from breeder Jake Letmanski who I’ve been lucky enough to mentor since he joined our team in 2017 at 15 years old. This has all the great attributes of ‘Firewitch’ but is half the size and has Kahori in its background which helps its sporadic rebloom. Matting silver plants spread Brent Horvath- Breeder instead of opening up in the middle. A portion of the royalty will go to Jake as he pursues horticulture in college fall of 2020. Eupatorium x ‘Polished Brass’ is an absolute pollinator and butterfly magnet. The 4’ tall hybrid plants emerge with glossy bronze red foliage and bloom like a cloud in August with creamy white flowers. For p Our Breeding Philosophy P the future we have Joe pye weed with purple foliage. Our plants are bred and selected in the tough conditions of the Midwest with hot humid summers and cold wet winters. We strive to breed plants not as a means, but with an end in mind. Our goals are simple- improved, durable, ornamental garden plants for our own climate and the rest of the world! Our plants are bred to stand the test of time, if they don’t survive or thrive in the garden why bother. a 2 On the cover: Amsonia x ‘Bases Loaded’ d3 Intrinsic Introductions Intrinsic Introductions Genus species Variety/Color COMMON NAME Genus species Variety/Color COMMON NAME Agastache x Velvet Crush PP#29,394 Anise Hyssop Liatris spicata Trailblazer Blazing Star / Gayfeather Allium cernuum Falling Stars - white Nodding Onion Molinia arundinacea Dutch Dreamer Tall Moor Grass Allium cernuum Wine Drop Nodding Onion Monarda x Mojo PP#29,982 Bee Balm Allium schoenoprasum Rising Star Dwarf Chives Orostachys x Octopus Garden strain Chinese Dunce Caps Allium x Chivette PP#30,151 Ornamental Onion Panicum virgatum Prairie Dog PPAF Switch Grass Allium x Windy City PP#28,100 Ornamental Onion Parthenocissus tricuspidata Grand Slam Boston Ivy Amsonia tabernaemontana Fontana Bluestar Pennisetum alopecuroides Ginger Love PP#26,442 Ginger Love Fountain Grass Amsonia tabernaemontana Short Stop Baseball Bluestar Pennisetum alopecuroides Love and Rockets PPAF Dwarf Fountain Grass Amsonia x Bases Loaded Baseball Bluestar Pennisetum alopecuroides Piglet PP#19,074 Dwarf Fountain Grass Amsonia x First Hit Baseball Bluestar Pennisetum alopecuroides Red Head Red Head Fountain Grass Amsonia x Halfway to Arkansas Bluestar Pennisetum alopecuroides Red Rocket PP#28,715 Red Rocket Fountain Grass Amsonia x Midway to Montana Bluestar Pennisetum alopecuroides Yellow Ribbons PP#31,362 Golden Fountain Grass Amsonia x Seventh Inning Stretch Baseball Bluestar Penstemon digitalis Pocahontas PP#24,804 Beardtongue Andropogon gerardii Blackhawks PP#27,949 Big Bluestem Polemonium x Heaven Scent PP#20,214 Jacobs Ladder Andropogon gerardii Dancing Wind PP#26,892 Big Bluestem Polygonatum x Prince Charming PP#22,304 Dwarf Solomon’s Seal Andropogon gerardii Indian Warrior PP#24,999 Big Bluestem Prunella vulgaris Magdalena PPAF Selfheal Andropogon gerardii Red October PP#26,283 Big Bluestem Rudbeckia x American Gold Rush PP#28,498 Black Eyed Susan Bouteloua gracilis Honey Blonde PPAF Blue Grama Rudbeckia x Glitters Like Gold PP#30,933 Black Eyed Susan Carex pensylvanica Straw Hat PP#29,432 Penn Sedge Salvia elegans Golden Delicious PP#17,977 Golden Pineapple Sage Delosperma x Mountain Dew PPAF Ice Plant Salvia nemorosa Lurie strain Perennial Salvia Delosperma x Orange Crush PP#30,806 Ice Plant Salvia nemerosa Pink Wesuwe Meadow Sage Dianthus x Fuchsia Fire PPAF Pinks Salvia nemorosa Sixteen Candles PPAF Meadow Sage Echinacea purpurea Deep Pink Showoff Purple Coneflower Schyzachrium scoparium Jazz Little Bluestem Echinacea purpurea Showoff Purple Coneflower Sedum album Big Rock Stonecrop Echinacea purpurea White Showoff White Coneflower Sedum album Nerds Stonecrop Eryngium yuccifolium Prairie Moon Dwarf Rattlesnake Master Sedum (Phedimus) ellacombianum Cutting Edge PP#28,926 Stonecrop Eupatorium perfoliatum Milk and Cookies Boneset Sedum sexangulare Golddigger Stonecrop Eupatorium x Polished Brass Boneset Sedum sexangulare Yellowstone PPAF Stonecrop Festuca x Cool as Ice PP#27,651 Cool Blue Fescue Sedum spurium Red Rock Two Row Stonecrop Geum x Alabama Slammer PP#23,750 Garden Gems Sedum x Beka USPP#18,398 Autumn Delight™ Geum x Banana Daiquiri PP#25,351 Garden Gems Sedum x Bundle of Joy PPAF Showy Stonecrop Geum x Champagne Garden Gems Sedum x Lajos USPP# 14,421 Autumn Charm™ Geum x Cherry Bomb PPAF Garden Gems Sedum x Lime Joy PPAF Showy Stonecrop Geum x Citronge PP#28,893 Garden Gems Sedum x Peace and Joy PP#30,858 Showy Stonecrop Geum x Coppertone Punch PP#28,376 Garden Gems Sedum x Pillow Talk PP#28,528 Showy Stonecrop Geum x Cosmopolitan PP#24,982 Garden Gems Sedum x Pride and Joy PPAF Showy Stonecrop Geum x Gimlet PP#26,223 Garden Gems Sedum x Pure Joy PP#24,194 Showy Stonecrop Geum x Mai Tai PP#22,433 Garden Gems Sedum x Rock Star PP#29,036 Showy Stonecrop Geum x Sangria Garden Gems Sedum x Sunset Boulevard PPAF Showy Stonecrop Geum x Sea Breeze PP#26,437 Garden Gems Sedum x Thundercloud PP#21,833 Showy Stonecrop Geum x Solid Gold Dancer PP#29,656 Garden Gems Stachys x Summer Crush PP#29,899 Betony Geum x Tequila Sunrise PP#21,514 Garden Gems Stachys x Summer Romance PP#30,243 Betony Geum x Top Shelf Margarita PP#30,670 Garden Gems Vernonia x Southern Cross Ironweed Geum x Wet Kiss PP#27,227 Garden Gems Veronica incana Pure Silver Wooly Speedwell Hemerocallis x On Top Daylily Veronica x Good Night Irene Spike Speedwell Hosta x Hasta Mañana PP#30,157 Hosta Veronica x Kiss the Sky PPAF Spike Speedwell Lamium maculatum Ghost Lamium Veronica x Spike PP#27,814 Spike Speedwell Leucanthemum superbum Daisy Duke PP#21,914 Dasiy May® Veronicastrum virginicum Queen of Diamonds Culver’s Root Liatris ligulistylis Butterfly Magnet Meadow Blazing Star a 4 New plants for 2020 are shown in blue.
