We’ll also be treated to a special peformance by the world’s preeminent chamber ensemble, The Canadian Brass. Tim Lautzenheiser began his teaching career at Northern Michigan University. He then moved to the University of Missouri, and from there to New Mexico State University. Following his tenure in the college band directing world, he spent three years as Executive Director of Bands of America. Tim serves as Vice President of Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser Education for Conn-Selmer, Inc. PERFORMANCE BY CANADIAN BRASS sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Inc. 10:30-10:45 AM CENTRAL TIME Education plays a key role in the story of Canadian Brass and each member is uniquely attuned to training the next generation of players. Their support of education is also clearly viewed in their outreach and interaction with El Sistema, the acclaimed global music education program in Venezuela. Canadian Brass are: founding member Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Brandon Ridenour and Caleb Hudson (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone), and Jeff Nelsen (horn). KEYNOTE PRESENTATION BY CLIFF CROOMES 12:00-12:20 PM CENTRAL TIME Cliff Croomes serves as the Associate Director of Bands and the Director of the Longhorn Band at the University of Texas at Austin. He teaches courses in conducting and conducts the UT Symphony Band. He served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Louisiana State University and the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Baton Rouge. Dr. Croomes holds both his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from LSU. Dr. Croomes served as the Director of Bands at Georgetown High School (TX) and has also taught middle school band. PERFORMANCE BY MOANIN' FROGS sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Inc. 12:50-1:10 PM CENTRAL TIME Bending genres and uplifting spirits, The Moanin’ Frogs offer an electrifying approach to chamber music. Conservatory trained and entertainment minded, their dynamic and technically precise performances of classical, ragtime, jazz, and pop delight fans across the world. Featuring all six saxophones from soprano to bass, The Moanin’ Frogs deliver artist-level performances to small towns and major performance halls alike, performing for concert series, as concerto soloists, and for educational programs throughout the US and abroad. SIDE-BY-SIDE VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE WITH THE BLUE DEVILS 3:30-4:00 PM CENTRAL TIME John Meehan and Scott Johnson, Clinicians The Blue Devils were founded in 1957 by Ann and Tony Odello and toured on a national level for the first time in 1973. In their second year of national competition, the corps earned full DCI membership by their 9th place finish at the 1974 DCI Championships in Ithaca, NY. In 1975 the corps placed 3rd, and they won their first Drum Corps International Championship in 1976. Since 1975, the Blue Devils have never placed out of the top five and have won the world title an unprecedented 19 times. John Meehan has been a part of the Blue Devils brass staff since 1994, helping to lead the corps to an impressive number of Jim Ott Best Brass Performance awards and DCI World Championship titles. With experience at all levels of the Blue Devils organization, Meehan performed as a member of the Blue Devils C in 1980 before spending three years with Blue Devils B, then marching another four years in the organization’s World Class corps. Most recently he has served as the brass caption head of the Blue Devils while also arranging music for and teaching members of Blue Devils B and C. 6 A CONVERSATION WITH TBA FEATURED COMPOSER JOHN MACKEY moderated by Kevin Day 2:10-2:40 PM CENTRAL TIME John Mackey has written for orchestras, theater, and extensively for dance, but the majority of his work for the past decade has been for wind ensembles, and his band catalog now receives annual performances numbering in the thousands. Recent commissions include works for the BBC Singers, the Dallas Wind Symphony, military, high school, middle school, and university bands across America and Japan, and concertos for Joseph Alessi (principal trombone, New York Philharmonic) and Christopher Martin (principal trumpet, New York Philharmonic). In 2014, he became the youngest composer ever inducted into the American Bandmasters Association. In 2018, he received the Wladimir & Rhoda Lakond Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. John resides in San Francisco, California. An American composer whose music has been “characterized by propulsive, syncopated rhythms, colorful orchestration, and instrumental virtuosity,” (Robert Kirzinger, Boston Symphony Orchestra) KEVIN DAY (b. 1996) has quickly emerged as one of the leading young voices in the world of music composition today. A winner of the BMI Student Composer Award and other honors, Day has composed over 200 works, and has had numerous performances throughout the United States and abroad. KEYNOTE PRESENTATION BY DR. BRADLEY KENT 1:45-2:00 PM CENTRAL TIME Dr. Bradley Kent serves as State Director of Music for the University Interscholastic League, where he oversees a system that provides educational competition for some 750,000 student participants in Texas. Prior to his UIL appointment, he held the position of Director of Fine Arts for the Richardson Independent School District, where he administered all Band, Choir, Orchestra, Visual Art, and Theatre programs. Dr. Kent began his career as a band director in the Lewisville Independent School District and went on to serve on the faculties of Texas A&M University–Commerce and Lamar University. FRAN KICK 10:15-10:30 AM CENTRAL TIME Fran Kick is the creator of KICK IT IN® a series of self-motivational personal leadership presentations and published materials. Since taking an educational leave of absence from teaching band at Centerville High School (Ohio), he has developed his part-time speaking adventure into a full-time mission. Fran presents programs across the U.S. and Canada to students, plus the many people who work with them. He has his B.A. in Music Education and a M.A. in Educational Psychology. His involvement at TBA has been graciously sponsored in part by Drum Corps International. 7 BREAKOUT SESSION 1 11:20 AM-12:00 PM CENTRAL TIME CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP FOR WINDS Peter Beckhart, Clinician A visual designer for marching bands and spring productions, Peter currently designs drill for Ayala High School (CA), Harrison High School (GA), James Martin High School (TX), and many other fall programs across the country.
