An unlimited number of players can play the game as long as there is also a non-playing clue master to ask the clues one at a time. • THIS COURSE IS FOR OLDER STUDENTS. ADULTS SHOULD MONITOR CONTENT FIRST. • Travel through this special 9-hole golf course by finding the answer from each hole. Each hole has clues and each clue you need counts as one “stroke”. • Players try to answer the question in as few strokes as possible. • You get one guess per clue. Get it right and record the score associated with that clue. Guess incorrectly and you move on to the next clue. Double bogey is the maximum score on each hole. • A printable score card is attached. Total up your score and see if you’ve managed to break par! HOLE 6 | PAR 4 • Stroke 1 (Albatross) – This war began in 1914 between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. • Stroke 2 (Eagle) – Russia and Germany became involved soon after. • Stroke 3 (Birdie) – The war quickly spread throughout Europe and into Asia. • Stroke 4 (Par) – In 1918 the United States officially joined the war efforts. • Stroke 5 (Bogey) – The war was one of the deadliest in history and lasted from 1914 to 1918. • Stroke 6 (Double Bogey) – Answer: World War I • RELATED GOLF FACT: While tournament golf was postponed during World War I, golf exhibitions were staged across the U.S. They raised funds in support of the war effort. LINKS TO LEARNING GOLF CLUB American History HOLE 7 | PAR 4 • Stroke 1 (Albatross) – President Franklin Roosevelt was in office when this world changing event took place in the United States. • Stroke 2 (Eagle) – It happened in the territory of Hawaii. • Stroke 3 (Birdie) – The year was 1941. • Stroke 4 (Par) – The event involved an attack by Japanese airplanes. • Stroke 5 (Bogey) – The attack led to the United States entering World War II. • Stroke 6 (Double Bogey) – Answer: The bombing of Pearl Harbor. • RELATED GOLF FACT: Many golfers served in World War II, including World Golf Hall of Famer Lloyd Mangrum. He earned a purple heart and won the first U.S. Open after the war. HOLE 8 | PAR 3 • Stroke 1 (Eagle) – This event took place in 1969 somewhere man had never been before. • Stroke 2 (Birdie) – The event took place more than 200,000 miles from Earth. • Stroke 3 (Par) – Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin were the first to accomplish this. • Stroke 4 (Bogey) – Armstrong said, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” • Stroke 5 (Double Bogey) – Answer: First astronauts walk on the moon. • RELATED GOLF FACT: In 1971 astronaut Allen Shepard hit a golf ball on the moon, where scientists say a drive could easily travel more than two miles in the air. HOLE 9 | PAR 4 • Stroke 1 (Albatross) – This event took place in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. • Stroke 2 (Eagle) – Afterwards the United States would be involved in a military conflict in the Middle East for more than a decade. • Stroke 3 (Birdie) – It involved attacks by four different airplanes. • Stroke 4 (Par) – More than 3,000 people died from the terrorists attacks. • Stroke 5 (Bogey) – The attacks involved the destruction of the World Trade Center towers. • Stroke 6 (Double Bogey) – Answer: September 11, 2001 Terror Attacks. • RELATED GOLF FACT: The 9/11 terror attacks saw two PGA TOUR events cancelled and the postponement of the Ryder and Presidents Cups.
