This position is a permanent, full-time appointment. Government housing is not available and transfer of station costs are not authorized. Cumberland Ranger District – Red River Gorge The Cumberland Ranger District is an excellent example of a balanced ecosystem management program that is consistently building on, and improving, its responsiveness to the public and its respect in the surrounding communities. Centered around the 8,300 acre Cave Run Lake and the 27,000 acre Red River Gorge, the District has one of the most complex recreation programs in the Region. Thirteen thousand acre Clifty Wilderness is also a major attraction. The District's watershed, wildlife, interpretive and timber programs have produced many successes. Through innovative and active management, the District has improved water quality and increased opportunities for wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing. The Red River Gorge is an area rich with cultural resources, dramatic scenery and spectacular cliff lines. The Gorge is a very popular dispersed recreation area with many trails for hiking and backcountry camping. The Gorge is also internationally known for excellent rock climbing opportunities. The Gorge contains the largest Wilderness in Kentucky and the state’s only Wild & Scenic River. The area is known for abundance of archaeological sites and is within a large National Archaeological District. The abundance of natural rock arches and other geological features are recognized in the National Geological Area designation. The Red River Gorge National Scenic Byway is a very popular scenic route through the heart of the area. The Cave Run Lake area of the district also provides many recreational opportunities. Several campgrounds and marinas surround this popular lake. The White Sulphur OHV trail provides 20 miles of riding pleasure for off-highway enthusiasts. The Tater Knob Fire Tower provides a panoramic view of the surrounding forest. Some other interests include the Clear Creek Shooting Range which provides shooting tables and targets; Zilpo National Scenic Byway, an 11-mile scenic route with stops along the way and the Pioneer Weapons Wildlife Management Area, a 7,610-acre tract set aside for hunting with primitive weapons. About The Position The incumbent serves as field work leader for a crew of backcountry ranger temporary employee(s), volunteers and interns, the number of which vary from season to season and through the year. Primary duties are associated with leading and instructing the crew and their work. The work is varied and includes such tasks as campsite rehabilitation, heritage and natural resource site monitoring, trail maintenance, trash removal, non- native invasive species management, wilderness management, visitor education, and compliance checks. Identifying work projects, preparing work descriptions, and working with the supervisor to obtain necessary resource clearances fall within the responsibilities assigned to this position. Position requires completion of Forest Protection Officer training and ability to exercise Forest Protection Officer duties, which includes frequent contact with visitors, addressing visitor compliance with forest regulations, and educating visitors on leave no trace camping and other low-impact recreation techniques. Incumbent serves as a chainsaw and crosscut saw operator and must be able to maintain intermediate saw qualifications (B sawyer). Ability to communicate well with co-workers and the public is a critical skill for success in this position. Incumbent is expected to be able to coordinate work assignments and projects with other district employees and partner organizations. Other duties may be assigned within the capabilities of the incumbent to balance district staff responsibilities. This position is often used to assist in other program areas, such as timber and wildlife management. Incumbent is expected to participate in fire suppression and prevention, as the Red River Gorge is a heavily visited recreation destination and escaped campfires are leading cause of area wildfires. The position will require working outdoors in rugged terrain and weather conditions that can vary from cold & rainy to hot & humid. The work environment may include exposure to venomous snakes, ticks, chiggers and other pests. Work may include carrying heavy loads over steep and uneven ground for distances of several miles. Interested applicants must possess a valid driver’s license. This is a full-time permanent position that reports to the Red River Gorge Manager. Work Hours and Physical Location of the Position This position requires that the incumbent routinely be available for weekend and holiday work schedules, with variation in the work schedule depending upon the time of year, visitation, and special activity calendar. The official duty station position is located at the Stanton Work Center. The Community Stanton, Kentucky is located in Powell County, approximately 45 miles southeast of Lexington, Kentucky on Highway 15 off the Mountain Parkway. Powell County was formed from portions of Clark, Estill and Montgomery Counties on January 7, 1852 by Kentucky Governor Lazarus Powell. It was the 101st county formed in Kentucky. Powell County is located in the Eastern Knobs and Eastern Coal Field regions of Kentucky. The elevation ranges from 580 to 1440 feet above sea level. Powell County is home to the Natural Bridge State Resort Park, Pilot Knob Nature Preserve, and the Red River Gorge. Pilot Knob in Powell County is believed to be where Daniel Boone first viewed the Kentucky Bluegrass region in 1769. Powell County is bordered by Menifee County to the northeast, Montgomery County to the north, Clark County to the northwest, Estill County to the southwest, Lee County to the mid-south, and Wolfe County to the southeast. Restaurants: 5 fast food places, 1 country style restaurant Financial Services: Two banks – Whitaker and People’s Exchange DANIEL BOONE NATIONAL FOREST The Daniel Boone National Forest is located along the Cumberland Plateau in the Appalachian foothills of eastern Kentucky. The forest encompasses over 706,000 acres of mostly rugged terrain. The land is characterized by steep forested ridges dissected by narrow ravines and over 3,400 miles of sandstone cliffs. These lands are federally managed to provide the nation with a sustained yield of natural resources, including wood, water, forage and wildlife. Recreation opportunities on the national forest are an added bonus. The conservation management of natural resources and recreation provides significant economic, environmental and social benefits in the public interest.
