WINCHESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB OFFICAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 2017-18 “THE CITIZENS POST” EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH WEST: WINCHESTER CITY v TAUNTON TOWN TUESDAY 17th APRIL 2018 19:45 Winchester City Football Club is a committee run members club and as such is an unincorporated association. “THE CITIZENS POST” WELCOME – FROM MATT & MIKE Welcome everyone to the Simplyhealth City Ground for tonight’s re-arranged match against Champions, Taunton Town. We particularly welcome the players, officials and supporters that have made the journey East from Taunton and we hope you enjoy your evening with us and safe journey home! Congratulations to Taunton Town on winning the title that they have thoroughly deserved and good luck for next season as they move into the Southern Premier League. Both sides come into the game on the back of draws at the weekend. Taunton drew with fellow high-flyers, Wimborne Town. Whilst the Citizens came from behind to draw 1-1 away at Swindon Supermarine, thanks to Rob Carr’s late second-half leveller. In recent weeks, there have been lots of goings-on in the former capital. Pat Cox has left the club by mutual consent. Whilst Paul Murray and David Malone will be remaining at the club, albeit with Paul Murray in a different capacity. Elliott Trodd has agreed to become the new Club Chairman. Darrell Gowers will be stepping down as Vice-Chairman, and Martin Moody has relinquished his role as Secretary, with Alan Davis coming into the role to replace Martin. City’s recent form has been good with a comprehensive 4-1 home win against Yate Town last time out at the Simplyhealth City Ground, and that was followed a fine comeback at Salisbury. City were 2-0 down at half-time but two second-half goals from Adam Tomasso and Josh Harfield salvaged a point for Davo’s side. City were then beaten 1-0 away at AFC Totton on Thursday before another hard-earned and deserved point away at Swindon Supermarine on Saturday. Your Programme Editors, Matt Richbell & Mike Carter, are running the London m Marathon this Sunday. See the link later in the programme to be able to sponsor them! Coming up this week, see Ryan Andress and Elliott Trodd’s Under 18s play against Team Solent at Romsey Town FC on Thursday night. Kick-off is at 19:45. I was to start off by congratulating Leigh and all of his players and their committee and supporters for a fantastic achievement in winning the league comfortably, they have been the bet side we played for sure and have blown sides away and on a long unbeaten run. We are delighted that we can host you tonight and can congratulate you personally for it, although we will also be doing our utmost to be the first side to beat the champs as well!! I wish you a pleasant stay with us and a safe trip home after the game. To say it’s been a tough week would be an understatement for our lads, all of the postponed games and the way it’s all fallen couldn’t have given us a tougher spell of fixtures in the space of a week/10 days including tonight, to have 5 games in that space of time all against sides in the play-off shakeup is obscene really, it hasn’t gone perfectly for us, however I couldn’t have been prouder of the boys for what they have given me and for this football club! Firstly a very impressive and comprehensive victory against Yate last Saturday with a 4-1 win, followed by a superb draw at Salisbury after being 2-0 down at the break, then defeat to AFC Totton away 1-0 when an early poor goal conceded was our undoing, followed by a dominant display from us without being able to get the goal which was the least we deserved, was also disappointed with events after the game which our fans had to endure but that’s another matter, although comes as little surprise to me. To have to go less than 48 hours later after that disappointment to Swindon who were 4th and had a free week and play as we did, 1-0 down we chased and hassled them throughout and got an equaliser only to go and chase again for the victory, I was bursting with pride with the lads and I can’t thank them enough for their attitudes and efforts and I certainly wouldn’t swap them lads for any that we have played of late, so that’s how much potential we have in this group! I must finally thank all of the fantastic supporters who travelled all over to cheer the boys on, we are all very grateful for the support you had given us, there really is a strong bond between the staff/players and the fans which I’ve not experienced like this in my career very often, we will try and give you a few more smiles and reasons to cheer in the remaining games this year, then will see what we can do for an even more exciting year next year! Enjoy the game! Up the citizens! Davo “THE CITIZENS POST” CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS It is good to be playing at home after three away games. We are also in the midst of an end to the season that sees the Citizens play eight games in twenty-one days. This is a lot of football for the players, who have stood up to the test so far especially considering that we have a small squad. Our performance last Saturday away to Swindon Supermarine showed what the team are made of in a good game against a decent Swindon side. The game ended in a one all draw, which was a fair result. We now have three games at home, tonight, Saturday v North Leigh and next Tuesday night against Cirencester. Tonight, we welcome the crowned league champions, Taunton Town, here to the Simplyhealth City Ground. They deservedly hold the top spot, which they have occupied for most of the season. We congratulate the Peacocks for their success and wish them well in the higher league next season. Off the pitch recent discussions as to next season have produced a good result. Following weeks of speculation, we can now confirm that Winchester City Football Club has made a final decision in their quest to reorganise prior to the 2018 - 2019 season. The Club has held talks with several interested parties, who have expressed an interest in taking control of the Club. None of these discussions have resulted in a satisfactory way forward. We are very pleased therefore to announce the following appointments, which have now been confirmed by the Committee of WCFC at a committee meeting last night. Chairman: Elliott Trodd Treasurer: Paul Murray Director of Football: David Malone Secretary: Alan Davis Elliott, who is 44, is currently Head of Youth Football, where we have enjoyed a lot of success and is a committee member. He is also a successful local businessman and lives locally. The future is bright. It is red and black! Regards Paul Murray Chairman (until 30th April) Winchester City Football Club “THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT…TAUNTON TOWN CLUB HISTORY The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by a few local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter 1948. They then played on a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman’s Park, Haines Hill.
