As I look ahead to the 2020-2021 season, I do so with excitement and enthusiasm. I am aware of the many challenges that will face us as we move forward; not least the challenge of restoring confidence and feeling safe as we steadily return to Masonic normality. Our fraternal spirit and the way we go about our business makes us a very special Province of which I am hugely proud. Therefore, I am very confident that whilst we will need to adapt, we will continue to flourish in these uncertain times. We must continue to attract new members and welcome them warmly into Berkshire Freemasonry. This may require some short-term creativ- ity and flexibility on our part. Whilst there is concern about this, I have concluded that it is important not to deny others the richness of being a Berkshire Freemason and the opportunity of starting their own personal masonic journeys. Enjoyment of Freemasonry and all that it gives is paramount. So, I am looking for every brother to do his very best to continue to make a valuable contribution to his Lodge and the success of the Province as a whole. It is that unwavering commitment, beyond our own personal orbit, that will make a real difference to Berkshire Freemasonry and ensure that we emerge unscathed and stronger. It is a unique privilege to be your Provincial Grand Master and all that I have experienced in the last year working alongside you has only served to strengthen my resolve. Let us go forward together into the new season and make a real difference to Berkshire Freemasonry and to our communities. As always, I warmly welcome our newly initiated brethren and I look forward to meeting with you all as I travel around the Province. ANTHONY C HOWLETT-BOLTON 5 INFORMATION 1. What is Freemasonry (notes from a pamphlet published by the Board of General Purposes, United Grand Lodge of England). Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies. It is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas which follow ancient forms and use stonemasons’ customs and tools as allegorical guides. The essential qualification for admission and continuing member- ship is a belief in a Supreme Being. Membership is open to men of any race or religion who can fulfil this essential qualification and are of good repute. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. Its essential qualifications opens it to men of many religions and it expects them to continue to follow their own faith. It does not allow religion to be discussed at its meetings. For many years Freemasons have followed three great principles. Brotherly Love. Every true Freemason will show tolerance for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures. Relief. Freemasons are taught to practise charity, and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals. Truth. Freemasons strive for truth, requiring high moral standards and aiming to achieve them in their own lives. Freemasons believe that these principles represent a way of achieving higher standards in life. From the earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums have been given to national and local charities. Freemasonry demands from its members a respect for the law of the country in which a man works and lives. Its principles do not conflict with his duty as a citizen which must always prevail over any obligation to other Freemasons. 6 The secrets of Freemasonry are concerned with its traditional modes of recognition. It is not a secret society. Its constitutions and rules are available to the public. There is no secrecy about its aims and principles. Like many other societies, it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members. A Freemason is encouraged to do his duty first to his God (by what ever name he is known) through his faith and his religious practice, and then without detriment to his family and those dependent on him, to his neighbour through charity and service. None of these ideas is exclusively Masonic, but all should be universally acceptable. Freemasons are expected to follow them. _______ 2. Festive Board This is one of the great pleasures of Freemasonry but it is far more pleasurable if it runs smoothly, and with harmony. It is
