She has a Friday, February 19 Bachelors Degree from the Puebla State Conservatory of Kate Reid, vocalist, Music in Violin Performance, a Masters in Music Education from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and 7:30 pm at Westminster a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from Texas Tech Presbyterian Church, University. 1360 West Main St. As a music educator advocate, Dr. Placeres created and developed the string and Celtic Nights—Spirit of orchestra programs at UT Brownsville and was also involved in bringing string Freedom, 7:30 pm in education to the city of Brownsville by founding multiple string projects. She is an Kirkland fine Arts active orchestra clinician for the Texas Music Educators Association and the Topeka, Center Kansas area. As a certified member of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association, she is constantly asked to judge for Solo and Ensemble Contest in different UIL Texas regions. Appearing with Dr. Placeres will be three Millikin students, who were winners of this year’s Concerto/Aria Competition. They are Kyle Johnson, piano; John Robinson, trombone; and Abigail Karnes, soprano. Kate Reid is a working jazz singer and pianist appearing regularly with her quartet at jazz venues all over the Los Angeles area. She has worked with many of the great jazz musicians in Los Angeles including guitarists Ron Eschete and Larry Koonse and drummer Roy McCurdy to name just a few. She is in demand by audiences for her swing style and delivery of great jazz standard lyrics. Kate’s latest CD, The Love I’m In, was released in September of 2011 and features tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts and pianist Otmaro Ruiz. Like her 2008 release, Sentimental Mood, The Love I’m In includes tunes from the great American songbook. Kate is a working session singer in L.A. and has lent her voice to feature films, commercials, publishing demos, cruise ship shows and artist albums. In April of 2011, Hal Leonard published the vocal method book How To Get The GLEE Sound which Kate co-authored with producer/author Andy Waterman of Umbrella Media. Dr. Kate Reid is on the music faculty at Cypress College in Cypress, California and currently serves as chair of the music department as well as head of the applied music and jazz programs. Kate holds a B.M. in Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University (1992), a M.M. (1996) and a D.M.A. (2002) in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami. Akin to America's 4th of July, the Easter Rising of 1916 created the Ireland we know and love today. Celtic Nights honors the struggle of a people fighting to gain freedom, independence, and true democracy through music, song, dance and story telling with pride and passion. The cast of three male vocalists and three beautiful female singers, six of Ireland's most talented and coveted international dancers and our fine musicians, will leave the theatre ringing with the sounds of Celtic Music old and new. Performances will begin on stage around 8:30 am. Each ensemble will receive a 30 minute clinic following their performance. OneVoice will present a short concert at 1:00 pm. Activities will conclude by 5:00 pm and, of course, there is no admission charge. The program will feature a variety of music ranging from Rocael Hurtado’s “Tennis Club” for marimba ensemble to Richard Lerman’s “Travelon Gamelon” for six players performing on three amplified bicycles. Members of the MU wrestling team will join the ensemble for the premiere of a new dramatic work composed by Dr. Jeremy Brunk entitled, “Match Play.” Faculty Recital Series Silvan Negrutiu, piano Sunday, February 28, 4:00 pm Kirkland Fine Arts Center Free and open to the public On Sunday, February 28, the School of Music at Millikin University concludes its second season of the Faculty Recital Series. Dr. Silvan Negruţiu will present an outstanding program of classic piano works, including pieces by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin and Ginastera. Pianist Silvan Negruţiu has performed around the world and has appeared as soloist with prestigious orchestras including Dublin Symphony and the Enescu Philharmonic. A dynamic piano pedagogue, he is in demand for master classes and piano competition juries. Currently, Negruţiu is Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Millikin University. Millikin’s music faculty work tirelessly to bring out their students’ artistry.
