Warm Up and preparation, using a progression of articulations from within the social dance lexicon. 2. Demonstration of basic steps and rhythms from each social dance, including (but not limited to): swing, salsa, cha cha, rhumba, waltz, foxtrot, samba, tango, merengue, Charleston, polka. 3. Construction and demonstration of sequences and combinations typical within each style of ballroom dancing, including designs in space. 4. Demonstration of basic partnering skills from each social dance, including forms of leading, following, support, and cueing. 5. Explanation and facilitation of social dance etiquette, customs, and comport 6. Description and facilitation of improvisational aspects of social dance. 7. Presentation and discussion of video and/or live performance of historical, competitive, and professional social dance. 8. Discussion of social dance history, cultural infusions, and current events. 9. Requirement of a written or oral report, responding to a social dance event or topic. 10. Direct a culminating dance, providing choreography or facilitating student choreography within the form 11. Providing a final social dance event or performance as a culminating event. Methods of Evaluation of Student Performance 1. Skill demonstration of technique, steps and patterns, form and alignment, rhythm. 2. Evaluations, low-stakes quizzes or discussion about social dance terminology and vocabulary. 3. Participate in a social dance event, or view a professional dance concert or ballroom competition, and write a description and response to your experience, referring to the course terms, vocabularies, historical/cultural information and concepts. 2. Develop combinations and sequences in groups, within an assigned or chosen genre of social dance and present to the class. 3. Write a self evaluation of one’s progress and quality of participation in the class, establishing and stating personal goals and documenting the process of learning and practicing social dance. 4. Present research on a particular genre of social dance, highlighting its cultural origins and infusions, historical and contemporary iterations. TECHNICAL DETAILS Catalog Description Skills in popular social dances of the late 19th to mid-20th century, providing a chronological survey. Topics include: Cha Cha, Charleston, Foxtrot, Mambo, Merengue, Polka, Rhumba, Swing, Samba, Salsa, Tango, Waltz. Provides dance students with a strong foundation in partnering skills and proficiency in vernacular genres of American dance, including their cultural and historical origins.
