Review of Section 13 Dermatological medicines‐ (Topical) Section reviewed by: International Leagues of Dermatology Societies (ILDS) 13.1 Antifungal Medicines • ILDS Recommendation: – Add Terbinafine Oint. (some concerns for cost) – Remove Whitfield Ointment (Benzoic acid+Salicylic acid) (due to low efficacy, lengthy treatment and irritation) • Member Recommends: – Adopt ILDS recommendations (add Terbinafine to the List and remove Benzoic acid + Salicylic acid) 13.2 Anti‐infective medicines • ILDS Recommendation: – Add Tetracycline Oint. (might cause microbial resistance) Or Mupirocin (expensive but established efficacy) – Then remove Neomycin – Consider removing Gentian Violet (due to presence of other antiseptics) or move it to Antiseptics • Member Recommends: – Compare cost‐effectiveness of Tetracycline and Mupirocin; if acceptable add Mupirocin otherwise Tetracycline THEN remove Neomycin+Bacitracin – Move Gentian Violet to Antiseptics (section 15.1) 13.3 Anti inflammatory and antipruritic medicines • ILDS Recommendation: –No ILDS recommendation on the review text –In a table in last page of review proposed “Consider adding intermediate strength steroid to the list” • Member Recommends: –Do not change the list 13.4 Astringent medicines • ILDS Recommendation: –Remove Aluminium diacetate due to lack of efficacy • Member Recommends: –Adopt ILDS recommendation and delete 13.4 section 13.5 Medicines affecting skin differentiation and proliferation • ILDS Recommendation: – ILDS dose not agree for addition of Crotamiton (for localized itching) and Petrolatum (for Xerosis) to the List – Possible deletion of Dithranol from the list due to high possibility of caustic effects and lack of usefulness – Add 5% Urea • Member Recommends: – Do not add Crotamiton and Petrolatum to the List – Consider deletion of Dithranol from the list (for the next meeting) – Change Urea dosage form (already on the List) to: 5%‐10% 13.6 Scabicides and pediculicides • ILDS Recommendation: – Add either Sulfur preparation (low cost and high availability) or Gamma Benzene hexachloride (Lindane) (possible toxicity in children) to the list • Member Recommends: – Add Gamma Benzene hexachloride (Lindane); due to its availability; to the list with “age restriction” .
