Pembroke Dock Marine will set the scene for its Pond next evolution. As part of the development process we identified some Slipways impacts and we’ve worked with community groups, regulators and Government to find alternative approaches. Graving Dock The graving dock was originally constructed c.1820 but remodelled and extended between 1858-61. It is Grade II* listed (including the cast iron bollards and the capstans). Mitigation: ▪ The Graving Dock structure will remain intact but sensitively infilled to allow for necessary recovery (any eventual building must not damage the structure) ▪ The caisson gate will be recovered and renovated for interpretation use ▪ The mouth of the dock will be left open to aid interpretation ▪ The ambition is that the capstans and bollards will be reused Additional Pickling Slipways Visual Home Pond mitigation impact Pickling Pond The Grade II listed Timber Pond was built in 1844 for the purpose of preserving and pickling timber for masts. This will be infilled. Mitigation: ▪ Sensitive infill will allow recovery of the Pickling Pond if needed. It is envisaged that fine non-damaging material (like sand) be laid against the walls to protect the stone work with infill material making up the remainder ▪ A 2m high space along the western coping will be retained to provide a pedestrian walkway adjacent to the existing road Additional Graving Slipways Visual Home Dock mitigation impact Slipways The slipways shown were built 1843-45 and are listed Grade II. The works will see the removal of the central section between the two slips and reprofiling. Mitigation: ▪ The eastern and western flank walls will remain in situ preserving some of the architectural value. They will be restored and preserved to ensure their context remains ▪ Recovered stonework and coping will be reused Graving Pickling Additional Visual Home Dock Pond mitigation impact Additional mitigation ▪ Historic buildings that include the Sunderland Hangar Annexes and the Grade II Former Foreman’s Office will be renovated ▪ Works on Carriage Drive will help improve interpretation and better link the town and the Dockyard ▪ Enhanced interpretation will help the historic dockyard come to life Graving Pickling Slipways Visual Home Dock Pond impact Visual impact The planning application includes three fabrication and assembly buildings (built on demand). The application covers the largest possible footprint to ensure the needs of industry can be met.
