"Did daddy want to be cremated or buried?" "Would daddy want a military service?" "Who will help us with the insurance, who contacts the paper, how many death certificates will we need..." These are questions that we hear all to often. Families will sit down with us and not know what to do or which direction to go. Our family at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home is here to help you with these questions. More times than not it is easier on the family to talk about these decisions ahead of time. Even in my own family I have experienced this, one set of grandparents had everything planned out and the other set did not. It was a lot easier to sit down with my mother and aunt and go through their parents arrangements. They had everything planned out, right down to the songs that they wanted played, and clothes that they wanted to wear. My daddy and his brother had to start from scratch, picking out the casket, writing the obit, selecting the songs. Was one easier than the other? Yes, easier on the family because their parents took the time to plan and take the burden off of their children. The other aspect of it is the money. How are we going to pay for this? Their are two things in the world that most people do not like to talk about, death and money. It is a whole lot easier to discuss the money side of a funeral before death. Helping families decide how they are going to pay for their funeral is another way that we can help. Sometime it is best to pay for the funeral ahead of time, other times families choose to wait until time of death to pay for the funeral. Different factors come in to play in bother decisions. Regardless of what decision you choose to make; burial, cremation, pre-pay or wait until time of death to pay, make a decision and have a plan. Get with your family, come to the funeral home and sit down with one of our family members to talk about your wishes. Everything can be written down and kept in a personal folder and on file at the funeral home. The other statement that is a joy or pleasure to hear from families is "I sure am glad daddy came in ahead of time and took care of all the decisions, this has been a lot easier than I expected."
