CLAWTON CLARION July 2020

CLAWTON CLARION July 2020 Welcome to the June 2020 edition of the Clawton Clarion. After the long dry and sunny Spring, the start of summer has brought us plenty of rain – welcome for some! While we are still having some restrictions placed on our lives, gradually services are re opening and we can meet up with a limited number of friends and family once again. Information in this edition is correct at the time of going to print, but we await announcements throughout July regarding further loosening of restrictions and hope that everyone remains safe and well. Please send contributions for the next edition by midday on Monday 20th July 2020 to [email protected] or call me, Judi Graham: 01409 271265 If you would like to receive the Clarion electronically, send me your e mail address St Leonard’s Church The church in Clawton will remain closed for the moment but St Peter and St James church at Halwill is now open for private prayer. The opening hours are 10.0am to 6.00pm. Can visitors please respect social distancing and to use the hand gel supplied before and after their visit. From Irene Ellis Many Clawton residents will remember Nigel Galton who used to live at Higher Tinacre and was a very active member of the Church in Clawton. He received a successful kidney transplant operation last week. Nigel had been waiting for some time having been on dialysis and we wish him well in his ongoing recovery. From Paul Grafton Help! Paul Grafton is finalising a map of the churchyard showing all graves linked to photographs of each headstone (there seems to be no official record showing grave locations). Last summer he took a photograph of a circular plaque for Ceinwen Clement (1996) but didn’t note its location and now in spite of much searching cannot find it. If anyone knows whereabouts in the churchyard it is please could they let Paul know on [email protected]? Many thanks. For any church related concerns or queries please contact: Rev Stephen Skinner (Priest in charge} Tel: 07554 142264 - email- [email protected] Iren Ellis (Church warden) Tel:01409 271371 1 Parish Hall report by Maralyn Bailey The hall re-vamp is on its way, the stage area has been re-painted, and now we have our eyes on the main body of the hall, so it is looking fresh and welcoming for when our organisations return, whenever that maybe. The outside work has began, Ken, Graham and Ryan (my grandson) are constructing the slope to the container and next week should see the container base extended. Weather permitting!! Anthony hopes to start this coming week, the supply of the items needed to address the drainage issues are hit and miss, so therefore the supply timetable could just cause a blip in progress. I more than thank the "boys" for all their hard work, their ideas have been adapted as the enormity of the job has been embraced. My role has been supplying coffee, tea, pasties and bacon rolls as and when required, holding wood while being cut to size, plus using my foot to hold pieces of shuttering, (most important!) We hope to see everyone again soon. Our community has been amazing during these surreal times. On the positive side we have had time to look around, listen and celebrate the area in which we are privileged to live in. Please stay safe everyone. Local Bus Services Update Most bus services in Devon have been restored with effect from Sunday 14th June. This is in response to recent Government announcements and a fresh round of funding direct to bus companies for commercially operated services, plus an anticipated additional grant via local authorites for supported services. Timetables are still being completed, but a summary can be found at the following website: https://www.traveldevon.info/bus/latest- news-service-updates/ Holsworthy Ales - from Dave Slocombe Unfortunately, due to the continuing restrictions, there will be no open brewery night in July. However, subject to government announcements, we will open as a shop from the door of the brewery on 11 July and subsequent Saturdays. Takeaway pints and socially distant outdoor drinking will hopefully be possible. I'm still doing my socially distant Tuesday delivery round which is proving popular. If anyone would like to order a box of bottles (£21) or a 5 litre (9 pints) minikeg (£16), please call/text me 07879 401073 or email [email protected]. Payments are all online to comply with social distancing rules. 2 How well do you know our local parishes? – Quiz with thanks to Evelyn Sharman (Answers on back page) Can you answer these questions in relation to the Parishes of Thornbury Hamlets, Holsworthy Hamlets, Pyworthy, Milton Damerel, Bradworthy, Clawton, Pancrasweek, Halwill & Bridgerule? 1) Which Parishes have a school? 2) Which Parish does NOT have a village/Parish hall but hopes to? 3) Which Parish does NOT have a pub but has "Charlotte's Bar"? 4) Which Parish is Southcott Garage connected with apart from the one in which it is located? 5) In which Parish would you find Dunsdon Nature Reserve? 6) In which Parish would you find the Molesworth Arms? 7) In which Parish would you find Lizzie's Larder? 8) In which Parish would you find Derriton Hill? 9) In which Parish would you find "The Stable" as a religious venue? 10) Which Parish has no official footpaths? 11) In which Parish are NFU offices located? 12) Which Parish has a brewery? 13) Through which Parish does the "Ruby Way" pass? 14) In which Parish would you find "Butterfly Lane"?
