For some reason I intensely dislike spy novels perhaps because I intensely dislike war. But these are tales of jaunty crime sprees that generally only hurt other criminals not as clever as the saint. I suppose one reason I love them is that even with a pretty extensive vocabulary I need to keep using the marvelous system that comes with ebooks to look up words and their derivations. If you have an old fashioned public school education in England you really have been taught!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another great adventureBy Carol KiekowThis book is another great compilation of adventures, in which Simon Templar visits Latin America. Cudos to Mr. Charteris for another great book!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Saint Goes SouthBy Ralph E. VaughanThis book collects four longish tales of Charteris' adventurer with Latin American settings. The first of them, "The Pearls of Peace," will seem quite familiar to readers old enough to remember the old Roger Moore television show, for it served as the basis for one of the early episodes. In it we see a tender and sentimental, almost maudlin side to the Saint, one not often put to the fore. The others are more indicative of a character often termed The Twentieth Century Robin Hood. All are quite good, however, and quite fun. Being from the Fifties, these stories present both author and protagonist more matured, a little mellowed, from their raucous origins in the Twenties. Charteris is more restrained in his writing, less intrusively snarky, and Simon Templar is more reliant upon wit and cleverness; but both rise to the occasion when circumstances demand action, courage and derring- do. All in all, an excellent collection for fans of The Saint and adventure. Mexico, Cuba, and Panamamdash;thatrsquo;s where the modern-day Robin Hood engages in somewhat revolutionary activities with ice-cold blondes, bedroom-eyed redheads, con men, and knife men, not to mention stealing pearls from a blind man. About the AuthorLeslie Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12th, 1907. With his mother and brother, he moved to England in 1919 and attended Rossall School in Lancashire before moving on to Cambridge University to study law. His studies there came to a halt when a publisher accepted his first novel. His third book, entitled Meet the Tiger!, was written when he was twenty years old and published in September 1928. It introduced the world to Simon Templar, aka the Saint. He continued to write about the Saint until 1983 when the last book, Salvage for the Saint, was published. The books, which have been translated into over thirty languages, number nearly a hundred and have sold over 40 million copies around the world. Theyrsquo;ve inspired, to date, fifteen feature films, three TV series, ten radio series, and a comic strip that was written by Charteris and syndicated around the world for over a decade. He enjoyed travelling but settled for long periods in Hollywood, Florida, and finally in Surrey, England. He was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writersrsquo; Association in 1992, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement. He died the following year.To find out more about Leslie Charteris and his work, visit www.lesliecharteris.com.
