School is done for another year and its time to hit the lake, campground or enjoy a family vacation. As the summer begins we take a bit of a break from some of our regular monthly activities here in Saprae Creek. Monthly movie night and HUB playgroup program will start up again in September. Unfortunately, due to the excess amount of rain, we had to postpone the Fun Run and Fun Day and remainder of our Tball & Soccer Programs until September , where hopefully the field and mosquito situation dries up. So far the kids were really enjoying themselves and learning so much. Thank you to coaches Jordann, Dustin, Megan and Mark, who were making the learning experience so much fun for them. Please if you have not already registered but would love to have your child involved in a camp close to home, take advantage of the DANCE CAMP being offered right here in Saprae Creek, at Vista Ridge July 8-12th. Hip Hop and craft geared towards a end of week production for the parents at a fantastic price, do not miss out, contact Tracy Unger today! Hard to miss the Placemaking taking place as we enter Saprae Creek. To answer your question, those SIX planters are going to be holding native scrubs with a flag pole in the middle of each. As Placemaking had also started at the mailboxes, the newsletter box was removed and I will be moving the printed copies to the newspaper box located at the corner of Spruce Valley Drive and Community Lane. Again I have reduced the number of printed copies, so I encourage you to either subscribe on the sapraecreek.com website and I will send the link to you monthly or under Ward 3 news on the website. Have a great month of July! Councillor’s Corner – JULY 2013 by Al Vinni Right off the top, I want to express my gratitude to all in our community that pitched in to help us re- cover from the flooding that we experienced; and in particular the efforts of all at the Regional Munici- pality of Wood Buffalo who went above and beyond the call of duty in their efforts to mitigate the damages that the flooding caused. As we move forward, I know that Council and administration will do everything in their power to see that the process of recovery moves along and that financial re- sources from the municipality, province and federal governments are obtained to assist with that re- covery. While we were not hit as hard as Calgary, many in our community have suffered loss and we need to stand by them in this time of need; I know we will. While the RMWB’s attention has been focused on flood issues, we will still have progress on a num- ber of issues over the summer. Firstly, Placemaking is proceeding quite well in Saprae Creek and it is anticipated that the entire project will be completed this summer. It looks like it will be quite attractive based on what is in place so far. Secondly, administration is proceeding with efforts to obtain the lot of land that is needed in Saprae Creek to create the gateway park that is much desired by residents. I am working closely with administration to see that our goal is achieved and will keep you updated. I hope to have some good news on this in the near future. Thirdly, concerning the roads, they will be worked on in this ward, they will be brought back up to standards, but the focus on flood related issues will cause some inevitable delays. However, the roads will be fixed this summer, please hang in there with me until we can get this done. Fourthly, concerning Alberta Oilsands and their plans for a SAG-D at the airport, it is pretty clear that as their stock prices sink form 50 cents a share a year ago to 3 cents today; that they are in a holding pattern until the Minister of Energy’s an- nouncement on the Urban Development Sub-Region (“UDSR”) which is expected this summer. The Minister’s plan con- cerning the UDSR will be critical in determining whether AOS’s plans for that SAG-D will ever continue. I am in contact with our Stakeholder Relations manager who is the point person on this matter, and I remain cautiously optimistic concerning the UDSR announcement. Fifthly, the process concerning the proposed sulphur processing plant by Oxbow at the Lynton rail yard has apparently been delayed by the flooding issues. Oxbow has advised that they will set a date of September for the Open House that they will have at Vista Ridge. I hope to see all of you out at the Open House so we can get all of our questions asked and find out exactly what this project entails. This will allow your Saprae Creek Residents Society to move forward with the best strategy in response to this proposal. Sixthly, while it is clear that we are still in the very preliminary stages with plans for building Community Halls in both Draper and Saprae, we will be continuing to take steps over the summer, so please stay engaged on this. We will see a couple Community Halls built, and they will ultimately have a very positive impact on the quality of life in our communities. Finally, programs and plans at Vista Ridge are moving ahead. Work on the zip line is proceeding as is planning for the golf course that will take the place of the now closed Quarry Ridge. Additionally, the SCRS has an ambitious plan for events over the summer and also will be putting on a dance camp for the first time. I understand that interest in this camp is high, with many children signed up, so hopefully this will lead us to more camp opportunities right here in our community in the years to come. Hope everyone has a great summer and I really hope the bugs die off a bit soon!
