More than three-quarters of Division I athletes think they will play professionally, but less than 2 percent make it to the pros. Most athletes become so consumed with playing their sport, that it is often difficult to keep perspective. Of course, we all welcome passion and commitment, but very few athletes think they will need to engage “plan b”, especially if they experience athletic success. As a Coach or Athletic Director it is somewhat difficult to have discussions about life after athletics. It is important to encourage commitment, but also have a firm grasp on what life might look like post-college. Serious athletes in general are built differently. Their commitment, passion and competitiveness can make professional transitions difficult. But, what if you could offer your graduating student- athletes an opportunity that would allow them to continue on into the world of professional sports? The NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development program understands how athletes are built, and what athletes are capable of when it comes to teamwork, dedication, and focus. In most cases, your athletes have never thought about a career as a NASCAR pit crew member, nor can they name the five most well-known drivers. That’s why our program focuses on education and training, while redirecting the talents that are already present in these individuals. Exposure to a career in NASCAR could be the next step in a professional journey for these athletes. THE PROGRAM The NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development These athletes are challenged with drills that showcase their Program seeks minority male and female senior athletes from flexibility, agility and strength. Selected athletes are offered an all sports. The selection process is based on athletes who are invitation to train and be a part of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity recommended by coaches and athletic directors. We seek Pit Crew Development Program, located in Charlotte, NC. student-athletes with a general interest in motorsports, extreme sports, the auto industry, etc. and individuals who possess a strong sense of character and work ethic. MARCUS HORTON TIRE CHANGER, INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR Phil Horton is currently the Pit Crew Coach for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program, and Director of Athletic Performance at Rev Racing. Horton got his start as the Athletic Trainer and Strength Coach for former NASCAR driver, Ernie Irvan. Horton expanded his clientele to include pit crew personnel as he set out to not only become NASCAR’s first “Pit Crew Coach” but in- troduce a fundamental philosophy and ergonomic skill set per position. As his coaching reputation grew, Horton was the Pit Crew Coach for notable drivers such as Dale Jarrett, Juan Pablo Montoya, Elliott Sadler and Sterling Marlin. In addition to his 38 NASCAR wins as a pit crew coach, Horton added a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship to his résumé in 2010. Coach Horton is a 1983 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. His career in athletic training and sports medicine included stops at Michigan State University, Florida A&M University and the University of Memphis. Coach Horton closed out his “stick and ball” career as the Assistant Athletic Trainer and Strength Coach with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks. Horton, who is in his 21st season was awarded the 2011 NASCAR “Industry Ambassador Award“ for his continued commitment to diversity in the sport. Horton’s current program has placed more than 30 athletes in NASCAR’s premiere series.
