Lynchburg College Study Abroad Greece 2018 Outline Itinerary (#5) May 20th (1): Your Greek Adventure Begins Overnight flight to Greece’s second city, Thessaloniki. May 21st (2): Arrival in Thessaloniki Morning flight connection in Vienna, afternoon arrival. Transfer to hotel, check-in for 4 nights. Free evening. May 22nd (3): Thessaloniki Sightseeing Travel on foot, by public transport, or by private motor coach? Sightseeing guided or self-guided? May 23rd (4): Thessaloniki Free Day Free day options include the city beaches or a day trip to Halkidiki or Edessa (‘City of Waterfalls’). May 24th (5): Thessaloniki Free Day Free day. May 25th (6): Travel to Vergina & Meteora Travel by private motor coach. Visit the Tomb of King Phillip in Vergina - guided tour & free time in museum. Mid-afternoon arrival in Kalambaka (Meteora’s town) & check-in for 2 nights. Late afternoon/sunset guided visit to one of Meteora’s monasteries & to view the area. May 26th (7): Meteora Travel on foot or by public transport. Several of the monasteries, perched precariously atop rocky outcrops, are often to visitors & can be easily visited - some on foot from Kalambaka. May 27th (8): Meteora to Delphi, via Thermopylae Travel by private motor coach (early start). Visit the site of the the Battle of Thermopylae & small museum. Check-in to Delphi-area hotel for 2 nights. May 28th (9): Delphi Visit Delphi archaeological site & museum. Free Afternoon. May 29th (10): Delphi to Sparta/Kalamata, via Galaxidi & Nemea Travel by private motor coach. Morning stop in Galaxidi. Cross the Gulf of Patras (possibly via the Antirio-Rio bridge). Afternoon visit to Nemea - self-guided Late afternoon arrival in Sparta/Kalamata area & check-in for 2 nights. May 30th (11): Full-day Visit to Sparta Travel by private motor coach. Visits to Ancient Sparta sites - Archaeological Museum, acropolis & ancient theater, the Temple of Artemis Orthia, & the Menelaion. Visit the Museum of the Olive. May 31st (12): Travel to Athens, via Corinth Travel by private motor coach. Morning visit to Ancient Corinth - both the upper (Acrocorinth) & lower sites - self-guided or local guide? Stop to view the Corinth Canal. Mid-afternoon travel to Athens. Check-in for 4 nights. June 1st, 2nd, & 3rd (13, 14 & 15): Introduction to Athens All travel in Athens will be by metro & on foot. The following sights will be visited during your time in Athens (June 1st, 2nd & 3rd and June 12th & 13th): • Acropolis & Acropolis Museum • Ancient Agora • Temple of Olympian Zeus • ‘Mars Hill’ • National Archaeological Museum • Aristotle’s Lyceum • Plato’s Academy • Museum of Islamic Art • Central Market • Lycabettus Hill June 4th (16): Depart Piraeus for your Greek Island Cruise Mid-morning embarkation & lunchtime sailing. Evening visit to Mykonos. Overnight sailing to Turkey. June 5th (17): Ephesus & Patmos Early morning arrival in Kusadasi. Included morning guided tour of Ephesus. Lunchtime departure. Afternoon visit to Patmos (possible included sightseeing - TBC). Overnight sailing to Rhodes. June 6th (18): Rhodes Early morning arrival in Rhodes. Included guided tour of Rhodes (content TBC). Evening departure. Overnight sailing to Crete. June 7th (19): Crete & Santorini Early morning arrival in Heraklion (Crete). Included guided tour of Knossos. Late-morning departure. Late-afternoon/evening visit to Santorini (possible included sightseeing - TBC). Overnight sailing to Pireaus. June 8th (20): Cape Sounion & Travel to Nafplion Early morning arrival in Piraeus & disembarkation. Travel by private motor coach. Visit the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. Travel to Nafplion. Early afternoon check-in for 4 nights. Afternoon visits to the Palamidi Fortress, archaeological museum, Bourtzi. June 9th (21): Epidaurus, Nemea & Iria Travel by private motor coach. Full-day visits to ancient Epidaurus & Nemea - self-guided or local guide? Possible visit to the artichoke festival in the village of Iria. June 10th (22): Free Day in Nafplion Relax & enjoy free time in Nafplion for sunbathing, swimming, shopping, or sightseeing. June 12th, & 13th (23 & 24): Athens in Depth All travel in Athens will be by metro & on foot. Continued sightseeing & free time in Athens Farewell dinner with Greek music & dancing. June 14th (25): Return Travel to the USA Morning transfer to Athens Airport for your flight to the USA, connecting in Vienna. Due to logistical reasons the exact order of sightseeing may vary, however all sightseeing listed will be included. Breakfasts are included on all days other than arrival day. All meals are included during the cruise Other group meals can be included if wished..
