Through “Champions of Character,” the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student athlete, coach, official, and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: Respect, Integrity, Responsibili- ty, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship. There were plenty of bright spots in his first season to build on. Although Bethany won only two games, the two wins were quite impressive. Knocking of Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 35-20, and upsetting Tabor College on the road, 24-17, Bethany will look to continue to improve under Coach Matsakis. The Swedes will return 28 letterman and six starters from each side of the ball. Coach Matsakis will look to the leadership and experience of KCAC Honorable Mention selec- tions Trevor Smith, Steven Williams, Rodney Molette, and Brett Crome. Bethany will have some holes to fill, which includes replacing 1st Team Offensive fullback Tevis Lin- nebur, 2nd Team Defensive linebacker Milton Collins, and Honoroable Mentions Rocky Castro and Cody Linnebur. The Swedes were second in the nation in Punt Return Yards per Attempt (15.9 yards). Bethany boasted a defense that was ninth in the nation for Pass Defense per Game (156.8 yards). They were also 19th in Total Defense per Game (331.6 yards), 21st in Opponents 3rd Down Conversions (33.5 percent), 39th in Total Sacks by (21), and 40th in Rushing Defense per Game (174.8 yards). Kelton Evans was 13th in the NAIA in Total Punt Return Yards (217 yards). He averaged 18.1 yards per return, had one touchdown, and his longest return of the season was for 84 yards. LonDarius Thomas ranked 23rd in Total Kick Off Return Yards (467 yards), and 49th in Kick Off Return Yards per Attempt (21.2 yards). There will be plenty of new faces on the sidelines for Bethany College, in both coaches and players. Manny Matsakis has hired two former Kansas State University players in Joe Gordon and Mike Lawrence. “Our coaching staff is very focused on assimilating over 100 newcomers to this year’s roster. We are extremely young and in order to compete in the KCAC we will have to get some answers quickly in regards to depth at some key positions,” said Matsakis. Bethany kicks off the year by welcoming SAGU to Lindsborg before heading to Lamoni, Iowa to take on Graceland University in their non-conference schedule. The Swedes will have five home contests this season including Homecoming vs. Southwestern College on October 11, and Senior Day vs. Bethel College on November 15. Matsakis added, “If we can reach our capability and these youngsters play together as a unit on each side of the ball I am confident that the 2014 Swedes will improve from last season.” 2014 Opponents Southwestern Assem- Graceland University Ottawa University blies of God University Sept. 6 at 6:00 PM Sept. 13 at 1:00 PM Sept. 20 at 6:00 PM Lindsborg, Kan.
