AIX Express Edition is designed to deliver AIX functionality at a lower price point for workloads such as the consolidation of smaller workloads on a larger server or for workloads running on smaller systems that do not need the vertical scalability of AIX Standard Edition. AIX Express Edition is limited to a maximum of four processor cores in a partition with a maximum of 8 Gb of memory per processor core. Clients can run multiple partitions with AIX Express Edition in a single server as long as each partition is running no more than four processor cores. Clients can mix partitions with AIX Express Edition, AIX Standard Edition, and AIX Enterprise Edition in the same server. AIX 6 Express Edition includes all features of AIX 6 Standard Edition: • IBM PowerVMTM Workload Partitions ManagerTM for AIX -- software-based virtualization • 64-bit kernel for higher scalability and performance • Dynamic logical partitioning and Micro-PartitioningTM support: – Automated load balancing – Online addition or removal of processors, memory, and I/O resources • Support for dedicated and shared processor LPAR groups • Trusted AIX: Multi-level, compartmentalized security • Integrated Role Based Access Control • Encrypting JFS2 file system • Kernel exploitation of storage keys for greater reliability • Concurrent AIX kernel updates, which can reduce the need for planned outages • Dynamic tracing with probevue • Robust journaled file system and Logical Volume Manager (LVM) software, including integrated file system snapshot • Tools for managing your systems environment -- System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) and the IBM Systems Director Console for AIX In addition to AIX Express Edition, IBM is announcing enhancements to PowerVM Virtualization. With this announcement, PowerVM Lx86 V1.4 adds support for the new IBM POWER7TM processor-based servers as well as continuous performance improvements. Also, PowerVM Lx86 V1.4 now enables Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 x86 applications to run on Power alongside AIX, i, and Linux applications.
