São Paulo, the largest metropolis in South America, is an exciting center for fine arts, theater, music and cultural life. This city is a medley of Brazilians from the country’s 26 states and from multiple ethnic groups, which makes for an exciting mix of traditions and fabulous food on every street. This six-week intensive academic program is organized in partnership by Tulane University and CET Academic Programs at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP). Students will have the opportunity to earn 6-7 credits and will take one Portuguese language course (intermediate and advanced levels) taught by CET faculty, and a course on current social issues in Brazil taught by PUC-SP faculty. Students will stay with Brazilian host families or in apartments with Brazilian roommates in São Paulo for a total Portuguese immersion experience. Excursions and activities in and around São Paulo will introduce students to all sides of Brazilian society. Application & Deadline The application deadline for this program is February 17, 2017. Student applicants must be in good academic standing and have at least a current cumulative grade point average of 2.5. Non-Tulane students are required to have completed one outside-institution Portuguese language course if they are seeking credit for PORT 2030. The pre-requisite for Tulane students to take PORT 2030 is PORT 1120. With over 40 beaches, the island boasts great natural beauty and is known for the friendliness of its people. All courses will be taught at the Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina (UNISUL), a private university founded in 1964 and recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. ISA students will attend courses at UNISUL's Ilha Centro location in the central downtown area of the island. During the Intensive Portuguese Language program, students at all levels of Portuguese language proficiency have the opportunity to obtain intensive training in Portuguese. Beginning and intermediate students can complete 144 hours of Portuguese-language coursework, while advanced students can complete 126 hours of Portuguese-language coursework. Course material focuses on grammar, conversation, written expression and culture. All courses are instructed in Portuguese and are evaluated on the basis of Portuguese language acquisition. Classroom learning is complemented by a variety of cultural activities including language exchanges with local Brazilian students, a Brazilian Dance Workshop, screenings of Brazilian films, Brazilian cooking workshops, and more. Excursions to Balneário Camboriú, Blumeneau and the Itajai River Valley, and the Serra Catarinense are also included among the program’s activities. Students may choose to live in an apartment or with a local host family. Application & Deadline Program Eligibility and Credits: Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50. Detailed course descriptions are available on the website. The program is open to students at all levels of Portuguese language proficiency. The application process consists of: the ISA online application, a supplemental page signed by a university contact, submission of official transcripts, and a $200 non-refundable application deposit. Application deadline is March 25, 2017. Note that the fellowship application and the ISA program applications are separate. Tuition & Fees $5,450 includes housing (in a home-stay with breakfast and dinner included daily or housing in a shared apartment with no meals included), tuition, cultural activities and excursions, medical insurance, airport reception, use of the ISA on-site office, Bridging Cultures Program, and on- site support from full-time resident staff. Chicago’s summer Portuguese course helps students gain intermediate skills in spoken and written Portuguese quickly by building on their prior knowledge of another Romance language (Spanish, French, or Italian). By relying on the many similarities with other Romance languages, students can focus on mastering the different aspects of Portuguese, allowing them to make very quick progress and to develop their abilities for further study at the advanced level or for professional purposes. This course provides 140 contact hours and accepts FLAS grants as full tuition. Prerequisite: at least one year of recent college-level study of Spanish, French, or Italian. Application & Deadline Registration for Summer 2017 will open in late January. Contact James McCormick, [email protected] 5 Language and Culture Program in Rio de Janeiro University of Florida FLAS Eligible Location IBEU, Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro Dates June 25 – Aug 5, 2017 Program Summary The University of Florida Language and Culture Program in Rio de Janeiro is a 6-week FLAS-certified program offering 140 contact hours of classroom instruction in Portuguese. Designed with ACTFL standards in mind, the classes and assignments are based on the 5 “C’s” of Language Learning: Communication, Culture, Communities, Comparisons and Connections. Hence, all classroom activities and assignments involve intensive language instruction in Portuguese. The program offers three levels: intermediate, advanced intermediate and advanced, plus a cultural component for all levels.
