United by a common desire to promote affordable sailing, they built their own boats, sewed their own sails, constructed their own club house, and ran their own races. 80 years later RYC continues these traditions as a volunteer yacht club and has grown into a major force in the Bay Area sailing scene. RYC is a club dedicated to serious sailing while at the same time having tremendous fun. Club members actively race all manner and size of boats--monohulls, multihulls, dinghies, and skiffs. Our Point Richmond location and excellent harbor facilities make it easy for us to hold both small boat and big boat regattas. RYC has a proud tradition of hosting world class championships as well as a multitude of regattas for Bay Area racers, junior and youth boaters, and RYC members. Angel Island <- Race Course Richmond Yacht Club 4 US 2018 I14 Worlds Location Richmond Yacht Club is on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, located in Brickyard Cove, a water-front community adjacent to Point Richmond. This area is nicknamed the “Richmond Riviera”, since the sun is usually shinning and the temperature is quite pleasant, while the San Francisco city front is typically shrouded in clouds and experiences much cooler temperatures. This is due to this area being in the lee of Angel Island which blocks a significant portion of the prevailing wind conditions, making for easy sail to and from the windy race course. Rigging, repair, and socializing can typically be warm and sunny while the racing takes place in the infamous Berkeley Circle race area providing consistent wind across the race area. This is a very fortunate pairing of locations and is why nearly all of the 14’s sailed in SF Bay have sailed from here. The look of summer in the San Francisco Bay taken from Mt. That way those with local accommodations (for instance in the marina) wouldn’t need to go far for food. • The club has ample parking space available for those who rent cars. • The boats will be stored in the dry dock area which is large enough to store all of the boats within the securely gated and fenced club compound. • Launching will be off the recently rebuilt docks. These were enlarged and configured specifically with the needs of dinghy sailors in mind (see picture on the next page). • Freshwater hoses on the docks and land. • No sand. 6 US 2018 I14 Worlds Boat Launching/Storage Facilities RYC has two dinghy launching areas. One directly in front of the main deck and another dinghy ramp at the beginning of B dock, providing plenty of space to get all competitors off to the race course with minimal hassles. It is located a short 30 minute drive from RYC making easy work of transporting containers to and from the event. 2 Chandleries Sail Loft Rigging Shop 8 US 2018 I14 Worlds The Berkeley Circle on San Francisco Bay “The Berkeley Circle on San Francisco Bay is the best skiff sailing venue in the world. In the summer you count on a 10-20 knot thermal every day. It’s not a one sided track, it has interesting shifts and currents and has little to no commercial traffic. Given the relatively strong winds and the short chop, boat handling is critical. The Richmond Yacht Club is excellent -- always a great race committee (they start on time with square lines and courses!) and a helpful, low-key attitude.” “The 1997 Worlds at RYC was the best one ever. So why not do it again?” Kris Bundy - 2000 International 14 World Champion, Multiple US National I14 and North American I14 Champion “San Francisco Bay is the best and would be perfect for the I-14 Worlds” Howard Hamlin - 2006 International 14 World Champion, 18’ Skiff World Champion, 505 World Champion “The best place to sail in San Francisco Bay” “All told, if you are looking for the best sailing on the SF Bay, the Berkeley Circle is your windy friend!” Edward Killeen - SF Examiner, January 11, 2011 ©Renee Speak Photo 9 US 2018 I14 Worlds Race Area • Team racing will be held between Southamption Shoal Area and the Berkeley Circle • Individual Worlds competition will be held in the Berkeley Olympic Circle area • Both courses are a short 10-15 minute sail from RYC • Easily adapts to any wind direction, typical wind direction is WNW • Historical wind data: http://windandtides.com/historical/2014-8-20 Teams Race area ©Sean Trew 10 US 2018 I14 Worlds The Racing Area San Francisco’s Berkeley Circle • Best big fleet racing venue on San Francisco Bay • Course can easily accommodate 100 boats, so there will be no need for gold/silver fleets • No commercial traffic in the race area • Winds range 15-25 knots at this time of year • Wind is from predictable direction, race area can accommodate large fleets from any wind direction • No kelp or weed in race area Major classes hold their big events on SF Bay’s Berkeley Circle • 2015 Audi Melges 20 Worlds • 2010 Finn Gold Cup • 2014 Farr 40 Worlds • 2009 505 Worlds • 2014 International Canoe Worlds • 2006 Star Worlds • 2013 Melges 24 Worlds • 2005 Etchells Worlds 11 US 2018 I14 Worlds Major Regattas At RYC • International 14 Worlds 1997, 81 boats • I14 and Wabbit Nationals 2014 29 boats • I14 Nationals 2008, 26 boats • Laser Midwinters West 2010, 104 boats • Leiter Cup 2011, 96 boats • Laser MidWinter West 2014, 84 boats • Etchells Worlds 2004, 72 boats • International Canoe World Championships 2014, 34 boats • Finn Olympic Trials 2000 • US Sailing Women’s Open Championship 1998 12 US 2018 I14 Worlds The Schedule Saturday Day 1 Team Racing, measurement and registration Sunday Day 2 Team Racing Day 1 Monday Day 3 Team Racing Day 2, Team Racing Awards Tuesday Day 4 Registration check in and measurement, Opening Night Social Wednesday Day 5 Registration 8-10 am, practice race, Club beer can race, beer Thursday Day 6 Race 1 Friday Day 7 Race 2 Saturday Day 8 Race 3, Social Sunday Day 9 Lay day Monday Day 10 Race 4 Tuesday Day 11 Race 5 Wednesday Day 12 Race 6 ©Renee Speak Photo Thursday Day 13 Race 7, Banquet Friday Day 14 Load containers BEAUTIFUL WINDY SAN FRANCISCO ©Renee Speak Photo BAY ©Renee Speak Photo 13 US 2018 I14 Worlds Accommodations A range of different accommodation options suiting the various needs, interests and budgets of the competitors will be available. In order of distance and accessibility to the regatta site, they are: • Option 1: Local Housing (free to competitors) As the club has in the past, it is looking forward to providing local housing either in club member’s homes or on boats in the marina. While it is the intent of the organizing authority that all competitors seeking local housing be accommodated, we are unable at this time to make that guarantee. At present, we are confident that we can house at least 70 sailors though we anticipate that with good planning and advance notice it should be easy to exceed that number.
