Tark is entering his lOth season at UNLV and has a school mark of 202-63 (. 762) . Overall, in 14 years of major college coaching, h e was the head mentor at Long Beach St. from 1968-73, he i s 3 24-83 (.796). At UNLV, he has led 1 the Runnin Rebels to the NCAA Tournament in 1975, 1 76 and 1977, when UNLV placed third in the country and he also led UNLV to the National Invitation Tournament in 1980, where the Rebels placed fourth, and again in 1982. Tark is a 1955 grad of Fresno St. ASSISTANT COACH TIM GRGURICH--Will be in his third season as a Rebel assistant c oach. Prior to coming to UNLV Grgurich spent 16 seasons at Pittsburgh, 11 a s an assistant (1964- 75) and five years as head coach (1975-80). He graduated from Pitt in 1964. ASSISTANT COACH MARK WARKENTIEN--Is also entering his third year with the Rebels and is 1 U~V S recruiting coordinator. Before coming to UNLV, Warkentien spent six months during ilie 1980 campaign with Cal-Irvine and before that, during the 1978-80 seasons, he was at Cal. St.-Fullerton. From 1977-78, he was the head women' s coach a t Cal-Riverside; f rom 1975-77 he was a part-time assistant at Saddleback JC and from 1973-75 he was a part-time assistant at Riverside City College. Warkentien is a 1976 grad from Ca l. Pat Christense n (3484) H'h 'C'rrn i ~ M;::l n T ~ rr v r h i n l <lS4\ 1982 UNLV SUMMER OUTLOOK With seven lettermen returning, including three starters from last year's 20-10 sqaa~ that advanced to the second round of the 1982 National Invitation Tournament, UNLV head basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian looks to the upcoming collegiate season with optimism. Pacing UNLV into its first year of Pacific Coast Athletic Association action will be returning starters--6-6 senior Larry Anderson from Pittsburgh, Pa.,a three-year starter who led the team in scoring last year; 6-9 senior Sidney Green , another three-year starter from New York City who was No. l in rebounding and No. 2 in scoring in 1981-82 and 6-2 junior Danny Tarkanian from Las Vegas, son of head coach Jerry Tarkanian. Last season, Anderson averaged 17.2 points, started all 30 games and led the team in minutes played with 1,050. For those efforts, he earned Sporting NewsHonorable Mention All America and Basketball Weekly Honorable Mention All West Coast. Green last season averaged 16.7 points and 9.0 rebounds. For those numbers, he earned AP and Sporting News Honorable Mention All America and Basketball Weekly Honorable Mention All West Coast. For all three seasons at UNLV, Green has been awarded Honorable Mention All America. Tarkanian in 1981-82 averaged 5.4 points and 1.8 rebounds, while credited with 57 steals and a school record 262 assists. He earned Sporting News Honorable Mention All America and Basketball Weekly second team All Junior College Transfer squad. In 1980-81, Tark played at Dixie College in St. George, Utah. Supporting that cast will be four other returning lettermen, led by 6-8 junior Richie Adams, from New York City, who last season started 14 games and got 7.5 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. The other returning lettermen are--6-9 senior Ken Lyles, who just recently underwent right knee surgery; 5-5 soph guard Leroy Byrd and 6-9 senior John Copeland, who was redshirted in 1981-82. Easing the pain of the departure of two starters and top reserve-­ starters 6-6 Richard Box and 6-8 Michael Johnson and 6-4 Dwayne Polee-­ are Tark's new recruits, two transfers and three incoming freshmen. The transfers are 6-10 junior center Paul Brozovich, who sat out last season at Saddleback Community College after playing two years (1979-81) at Pitt and 6-2 junior guard Jeff Collins. Collins was a two­ year starter at Arizona who transferred to UNLV last January. He will be eligible to play second semester of the 1982-83 campaign. The three incoming frosh are --6-6 Eldridge Hudson, considered by many prep experts to be the best high school forward in the country last year; 6-4 Gary Graham and 6-11 Georg Posti. Hudson was the 1982 Los Angeles Player of the Year and led his Carson , Calif . sqaud to a 26-2 mark and the Cali - ~ ate 4- A t i tle.
