Kellogg as a health food. It is the largest employer in the city. (pop.- 53,540) o 8 counties are represented in the 7th CD. o Clinton carried the 7th CD by 600 votes. (A protest vote against Bush) . BACKGROUND ON REP. NICK SMITH o Nick Smith decided to run for office when his complaining about government resulted in his wife urging him to run for office or "keep quiet." o Jack Kemp hosted a fundraiser for Nick Smith on Sept. 29th of this year. He raised for Rep. Smith somewhere between $10,000 - $20,000. o Rep. Smith's campaign debt is about $80,000. o Smith was elected to the state House in 1978 and the state Senate in 1982. o Smith promised his constituents that he would not serve more than 12 years. o Rep. Nick Smith sits on the Budget committee and the science, Space and Technology Committee. NICK SMITH !4J 003 BIOGRAPHY OF NICK SMITH (Michigan congre~~ional District 07} Nick Smith graduated from Michigan State university with a major in Political Science and Economics, an~ earned a M~~ter's degree. in Economics from the University of Delaware. He served as an intelligence officer in the u.s. Air Fu~ce in the early 1960s, returning to Michigan to go into partnership with his father on the family farm, where he and his wife, Bonoalyn, raised their four children. suce~ssfully expanding and operating the dairy cash crop farm, from 220 acres to 2000, Nick became active in his com.~unity ~G Township Trustee, Township supervisor, and served on the county Boara. He also served as a Trustee for Somerset Congregation~l Church and on the Board of Addison Community Hospital. Other public service positions include· State chairman of the Agricul.ture stabilizatiol'I and conservntion Services, Director of the Michigan Farm Bureau and National Direct.or of Energy for the U. s. uapartment of }t..qricultu:re in Washington, D.C. In 1976, Nick was the Republican nominee for the Michigan State Board of Trustees. In 1978, he was elected to the Michigan House of Reprasentativ~s, the only freshman to defeat an incwnbent. H~ was re- ~lected in 1980 and earned a reputation as a tax tiqhter. 1 ln 1982, 1986 and 1990, Branch, Hillsdale and Jackson county voters elected Nick to the Michigan Senate. He held leadership ·positions as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committae, served ten years as Chair, of the Agrioultur~ and Forestry ·:Coltl!llittee, was a majority member for eight y~ars of the Appropriations Conunittee and in 198&, was elected by hi~ col1e~gues a£ Presid~nt Pro-Tempore of the Senate. Nick has th~ distinction of introducing and passing into law more tax reductiun bills than any other lc9islator in the Michigan House or Senate. Mr. smi~h has made numerous speakinq appearances, both nationally and globally, discussing trade, agriculture, energy and conservation. He was a deleg~te to the American Assemh1y on World Population and Hunger representing the u.s.n.A., and served on the Michi9an Senate Select Committee on Inte~nation~l Trade. In 1991, he travelled to the soviet Union as a member of a national delegation on U.s.-soviet Cooperation and Trade, meeting with noriz Yeltsin and Mikhail Gorbachev. Nick was elected to the United States House of Representatives with 89 percent of the vote on Novemuer J, . 199 2. Bonnie and Nick's tour grown children and thr@e grandchildren all worked on the successful campaign for the Michigan Seventh Congressional District.
