The largest annual beer competition in the world judging both draught and packaged beer, this year the AIBA received 2042 entries from 358 exhibitors, including 1891 for beer, 109 for design and 42 media entries, all vying for a prestigious AIBA medal, or one of over 30 champion and major trophies on offer. In reaching the important milestone of the 25th year of the awards, it is important to note RASV’s ongoing commitment to ensure the relevance and value of the awards to all who participate. Reflecting industry trends, production techniques and consumer interest, new classes and criteria have been introduced to provide greater opportunities for brewers, including the introduction of the Consistency of Excellence medal which gives participants another benchmark to strive for and gives consumers confidence in purchasing high quality products. Thank you to our exhibitors, your constant drive and dedication to delivering high quality and excellent brews, which we have seen in this year’s awards, continues to strengthen the industry’s reputation. Thank you to Brendan Varis, Head Judge and the esteemed panel of industry expert judges, the largest in the competition’s history, whose dedication, enthusiasm, knowledge and professionalism maintains the AIBA’s credibility and high standard of assessing entries. RASV is thrilled to be a Festival Supporter of Good Beer Week (GBW) in 2017 and we congratulate the GBW team and Australian beer industry on a successful and exciting event, which provides an incredible opportunity for brewers to connect with consumers and a chance to showcase award winners from the AIBA. The awards would not be possible without the support of the valued sponsors or many stewards and volunteers and we sincerely appreciate their time and generosity in the delivery of the AIBA. RASV congratulates all medal and trophy winners in this year’s AIBA. We look forward to the successes your award wins bring and to another year of growth, innovation and achievement across the brewing industry. Mark O’Sullivan Chief Executive Officer Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria Australian International 4 Beer Awards Message from the Head Judge BRENDAN VARIS HEAD JUDGE The panel of judges for the 2017 Australian International Beer Awards was a patchwork of passionate people from all parts of the beer industry, including international beer authorities, sensory specialists and stylistic experts from the largest industrial breweries to the smallest of craft breweries. The panel came together for three days to share their knowledge and learn from each other while assessing a record number of competition entries. The robust associate judge program that has been in place for a number of years allowed for the increased workload to easily be accommodated, as experienced and trusted associates were promoted to full judge status. As always, the standard of beer entered was exceptional with the gold medal and trophy winning beers representing the absolute pinnacle of beer quality from around the globe. While the high standard of award-winning entries is to be expected, feedback from the panels indicated that even the lowest scoring exhibits were more technically sound and of a higher overall standard than in previous years. Congratulations to all entrants. Our head steward Craig Bowen and the dedicated team of volunteer stewards must also be congratulated for the efficient sorting and seamless serving of exhibits. RASV has done an outstanding job of growing this competition into one of the most highly regarded in the world and our beer industry can be confident that Australia’s pre-eminent beer awards is in good hands going forward.
