Marquette University Alumni Association National Board of Directors Pedro Arrupe Award In 1991, the Marquette University Alumni Association National Board of Directors established the Pedro Arrupe Award to recognize service that exemplifies the spirit of a Marquette education. In June of 2003, the award was endowed by significant financial contributions from current and former national board members, and the Jesuit Community. Pedro Arrupe was the Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1981. He was a man of simplicity, warmth, and optimism, who became known as a “man for others.” He lived a life committed to serving the poor and led others to explore the link between faith and justice. Since 1991, current board members funded this award annually themselves because they recognized that the university provides an environment that nourishes and calls forth the God- given gifts of each person. They believe those privileged to have a Marquette education have the responsibility to use that education in service to others. The Pedro Arrupe Award honors students who have been involved to an outstanding degree in service within and beyond the Marquette community, by being “one with” rather than “one above.” Nominees and recipients have provided significant leadership in community service and have been advocates for those in need. Traditionally, the recipient and nominees are honored by the MUAA National Board of Directors during the Friday evening of the September meeting to which former National Board Members and current members of the various college and interested-based executive alumni boards are invited.
