In only 60 minutes, we are going to bring your ideas to life by bringing your audience alive. What is the added value of your product? What are the most stupid questions ever asked about your idea and can you sell your product to me? About the expert Meie van Laar is an experienced educational developer and currently heads the Science Learning Centre at the NEMO Science Museum. Her fields of expertise include gender, STEM, inquiry-based learning, the methodology of tinkering and making science education accessible to primary school teachers. She was a finalist of Falling Walls Engage 2019. FALLING WALLS LAB THE WORKSHOP SESSIONS IN DETAIL Session B TRUST IN SCIENCE Lewis Hou The workshop session At this time where trust in science is being tested to its limits, how can we support and earn trust and trust-worthiness in our science engagement? How can we build long-term relationships and equitable partnerships with diverse communities to achieve this? This interactive session will introduce some of the key issues and research behind trust in science and share case-studies from the work of leading community science organisations. Through group discussions, provocations and personal reflections, you will leave this session with new ideas, practical strategies and the start of longer-term commitments to support better Trust- building community partnerships in your work. About the expert Lewis Hou is an experienced consultant and facilitator specialising in equitable community-rooted science engagement. He runs the social enterprise Science Ceilidh, was a finalist of the inaugural Falling Walls Engage and recipient of the Public Engagement Innovation medal from the Royal Society of Edinburgh 2018. Asmelash Taka The workshop session In this workshop, we will explore an entrepreneurial way to think about your innovative idea. There is a systematic way to think through how much start-up is in your innovative idea. We will give you a framework to assess and refine your idea and a communication toolbox to present your work clearly. We will have concrete examples and you will get to practice this yourself during the workshop. About the expert Asmelash Teka Hadgu is the Co-founder and CTO of Lesan. Lesan’s mission is to open up the Web’s content to millions of people through machine translation. He comes from Ethiopia where he had first-hand experience of people missing out on the Web because of language barriers. His background is in Computer science where he did his masters in Data Mining and Knowledge management, an Erasmus Mundus Master, and a PhD in applied machine learning at the Leibniz University Hannover. About the expert Captivated by the lack of innovation in women’s health, Sabrina Badir decided to tackle one of the biggest challenges in modern obstetrics: the diagnosis of preterm birth. She is the founder of medtech startup Pregnolia, founded to distribute a device to measure cervical stiffness which could lead to fewer preterm births. Her presentation of the device at Falling Walls Lab 2015 gained her first place. Pregnolia is co-funded by the European Union. Badir holds a PhD from the ETH Zürich, and was a Pioneer Fellow of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab. About the moderator Sarah Iqbal is the Communications & Public Engagement Lead at the The Wellcome Trust / DTB India Alliance. Prior to this role she worked as a research scientist at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida, investigating the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. She holds a PhD from the University of Oxford where she investigated molecular mechanisms underlying human genetic connective tissue disorders. Supria Dhanda is Vice President and Country Manager of Western Digital India. She leads India’s strategic charter and its expansion, key customer relationships, government relations, sustained growth of Research and Development capability, and serves as a spokesperson for the corporate brand in India. Supria’s fusion of business acumen, strategy and organizational development has driven high performance culture and strong growth for India region. Dr. Yuli (Chaido) Doulala-Rigby is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (MHKIE) and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) with 25+ years of experience in a variety of geotechnical and civil engineering projects. She obtained her first degree in Civil Infrastructure Engineering in Greece and her Master of Science (MSc) in Rock Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. Jill Tietjen is the President and CEO of Technically Speaking, Inc. An electrical engineer, she has spent more than 40 years in the electric utility industry where she provided planning consulting services to electric utilities and organizations comprising the electric utility industry and served as an expert witness before public utility commissions and other government agencies. An author of ten books and a national speaker, Tietjen is the series editor for Springer’s Women in Engineering and Science series. Prof. Chandrima Shaha is the President of the Indian National Science Academy. Her primary interest in research includes the understanding of the intricacies of programmed cell death processes in rapidly proliferating cells. She is the Former Director of the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, where she is currently the Professor of Eminence. She is also the President of the Indian National Science Academy. She is an elected fellow of the World Academy of Sciences and of all three Academies in India. Anu Acharya is a serial entrepreneur, columnist, poet, and a charismatic speaker. As the Founder & CEO of Mapmygenome, she introduced the concept of personal genomics in India with the launch of Genomepatri in 2013. She co-founded and pioneered her first venture Ocimum Biosolutions from 2000 to 2013 through innovative bioinformatics and LIMS solutions, global acquisitions, awards, and fundraisers. Dr. Anju Virmani is a Senior Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist practicing at leading hospitals in New Delhi, India, with over 20 years of experience. Her areas of specialisation are type I diabetes and neonatal thyroid screening. She is the Founder and President of the Indian Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology, and Chairperson for the Paediatric Endocrine Chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics. She is also the author of 15 book chapters, various articles and abstracts, and is on the editorial board of the Italian Journal of Paediatrics and the International Journal of Paediatric Endocrinology.
