West Tripura District Page-1 Introduction: West Tripura is one of the eight districts of Tripura. Agartala is the district headquarters and is also the capital city of Tripura. The district was reorganized in 2012 and was sub-divided into three districts; West Tripura, Sepahijala and Khowai. The district is surrounded by Bangladesh on its north and west, Khowai district in the east and by Sepahijala district in the south. The total area of the district is 983.63 sq km. SI. Howrah and Kathakhal rivers are the major rivers draining flood water from Bangladesh. In the recent past, due to climate change there are untimely rains and subsequently temporary flooding in the low lying area in the District. Particularly Agartala City is facing frequent floods due to blockage of drainage system and outflow of of rain water through Kathakhal and Howrah rivers. The department issues warning as per rainfall in the upper reaches and measurement of water levels in the selected locations of the rivers. Besides its own system of getting information, it receives information on rain fall and probability of floods from Indian Metrological Department (IMD) and Central Water Commission (CWC). Central Water Commission (CWC) has also got offices in different sub-divisions. At District level, Superintending Engineer, (W/R) after collecting and analyzing information will pass on the same to the District Control Room or D.M. & Collector and in his absence to the Addl. D.M. & Collector on three aspects of floods viz. (i) Locations/ Place. (ii) Area to be affected. (iii) Extent of floods likely to occur. DISSEMINATION OF WARNING After getting information of flood Sub-Divisional administration will pass on this information to the concerned BDOs who in turn will pass on the warning to the concerned Gram Pradhans and selected local leaders on telephone or through SMSs. In case telephones and SMSs do not work then the Volunteers and government officials at Sub-Divisional/ Block level can be used as special messengers to send information to the concerned local leaders. These local leaders will mobilizemembers of PRI bodies and locals to disseminate information to community. The Water Resource department will send warnings at least one hour before the water level is likely to touch the danger level. Further as long as the water levels is above danger level one hourly report to be sent by SDO (WR) to the District/Sub-divisional Control Room for keeping a close watch.
