DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER LIBRARY ABILENE, KANSAS Dwight D. Eisenhower: Records as President White House Central Files, 1953-61 LEGAL SIZED CASE FILES Pre-accession and A86-15 Processed by: TB Date Completed: November 1989 Linear feet of shelf space occupied: 55.2 Approximate number of pages: 102,800 These records were reviewed under provisions of the instrument of gift of Dwight D. Eisenhower signed April 13, 1960. Under terms of the instrument of gift the following classes of documents are withheld from research use: 1. Papers that are security-classified until such classification shall be removed. 2. Papers the use of which may be prejudicial to the maintenance of good relations with foreign nations. 3. Papers containing statements made in confidence unless the reason for confidentiality no longer exists. 4. Papers relating to family or private affairs. 5. Papers containing statements which might be used to injure, harass, or damage any living person. Scope and Content Note This series of the White House Central Files consists primarily of oversized attachments to correspondence that is filed in other series of the Central Files. Most of the Central Files were stored in cabinets designed to hold letter-sized (8 ½ x 11) documents. In many cases, however, the correspondence received in the Central Files was accompanied by oversized or multiple copies of attachments. If the attachments were too bulky or numerous to retain with the correspondence, the case file would be divided. The original correspondence was filed in the main files after it was annotated to show the attachments had been removed. The attachments were placed in the Legal Size Case with a cross reference sheet to show the location of the original correspondence. Material in the Legal Size Case was filed in chronological order by the date of the latest correspondence. If the correspondence was undated, or if there was no accompanying correspondence, the material would be filed by the date on which it was received in the Central Files. Due to the chronological arrangement it is very difficult to locate material on specific subjects. Access to material in the Legal Size Case should be gained by searching the correspondence in the OF, GF and PPF series of the Central Files. These will bear annotations which will refer researchers to related documents in the Legal Size Case. The annotations are usually in the form of a handwritten note at the bottom of the first page of a case file which reads “Oversized Attachments filed Legal Size Case.” The Legal Size Case also contains several files of original correspondence. Members of the White House staff frequently sent folders of correspondence to the Central Files for storage. In most cases the documents were removed from the folders and filed in the main files. However, if the staff member requested that the documents be kept together, the folder would sometimes be file in the Legal Size Case, particularly if it was a large folder. Several such folders were found in the course of processing this series. They are listed below to facilitate their retrieval. 1955 May 3 (Box 44) Files from office of Gabriel Hauge on wool tariff matters and US- Australian relations. 1958 Jan. 14 (Boxes 87-88) File from office of Robert Schulz on the Quetico-Superior Wilderness area, 1953-56. Subsequent correspondence on this subject was filed in OF 133-A-1. 1959 Oct. 8 (Boxes 104-105) File from office of Wilton Persons containing his records of Presidential meetings with legislative leaders and meetings of the Legislative Council, 1953-57. These documents are mostly duplicate copies of material in the Legislative Meetings series of the Ann Whitman File. 1959 Oct. 27 (Boxes 108-109) File from office of Jack Z. Anderson relating to Agriculture Department matters.
