MARY’S UNIVERSITY A Community of Excellence elcome to one of Alberta’s fastest growing and most dynamic universities. It may surprise some visitors to learn that St. Mary’s has grown by over 50% in the last W5 years alone, and we continue to develop new initiatives, programs and resources for our students. Most recently, we celebrated the opening of our new Heritage Centre, a state-of-the-art lecture and meeting hall, a major pre-function space and a large gathering area specifically for students. It is a wonderful way to mark the start of our 30th Anniversary as an educational institution. St. Mary’s can boast having the very best academic programs in the Arts and Sciences delivered by renowned faculty who are committed to creating a learning environment for their students that is second to none. We pride ourselves on our remarkable two- year after-degree Bachelor of Education program that can boast an outstanding placement rate for teachers upon graduation. And St. Mary’s is becoming even better known for its passion for social justice. Over 50% of the student community volunteers in some capacity. We can be proud of our innovative and ground-breaking initiatives with Indigenous communities, and we are just as excited to offer our award-winning Humanities 101 program for Calgary’s most economically disadvantaged citizens. If a university is really the sum of its people, then we are truly blessed. As well as caring and accomplished faculty, the staff at St. Mary’s are known for their commitment to students, and they manifest this in every aspect of their work. Similarly, our student body is not only academically rigorous but also caring and involved in the community (on campus and beyond). All in all, St. Mary’s University is a place with heart and passion. It is with particular pleasure, therefore, that I convey this welcome on behalf of the faculty, staff and students of St. Mary’s University. St. Mary’s is a university open to all and anchored in a 2000-year- old Catholic intellectual tradition that celebrates academic freedom and inquiry, diversity of programs and approaches, and breadth and depth of understanding and knowledge. We are committed to academic excellence and to student success. We believe that our welcoming atmosphere, our focus on academic excellence and our outstanding commitment to social justice are the reasons that we are growing so dynamically. Thank you for choosing St. Mary’s. We are better for having you here. Gerry Turcotte, PhD President 3 Message from the Vice-President Academic WELCOME TO ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY ongratulations on embarking on your academic journey at St. Mary’s University! We are delighted to welcome you to our learning community, where you will engage in Crigorous intellectual inquiry, develop lifelong friendships, and lay a strong foundation for your future endeavours. Relationship and community are at the heart of the St. Mary’s experience. Enjoy the intimate class sizes and the ability to know your fellow students and professors and to be known by name – and not a number. Our faculty will challenge you with new ideas and mentor your intellectual and creative capacities. You will learn to grapple with knowledge and to synthesize data in meaningful ways. You can connect your learning to the global community through experiential learning, travel study, and social entrepreneurship. There are many resources to support your growth at St. Mary’s, from S3 Student Success Seminars and peer mentoring through the Learning Centre to wellness initiatives and research instruction. Across campus, you will find staff to connect you with the supports you need to flourish. In the Fall of 2017, we will unveil newly upgraded Biology and Chemistry labs and a renovated Library with expanded capacity for learning and research. Meeting and gathering spaces for independent study and group collaboration are located across campus. Mindful of the importance of solitude and the balance that comes from contemplating the beauty of the natural world, we have installed seating in the glass-walled gallery of the new Heritage Centre that opens onto a spectacular view of Fish Creek Park. Our liberal arts curriculum, combined with a focus on the whole person – body, mind, and spirit – lays a strong foundation for future careers, post-graduate studies, family life, and ongoing curiosity about the world. Rooted in an ethos of social justice, a St. Mary’s education will prepare you to become active and engaged members of society, becoming fully human and deeply connected to the world around you. Welcome to our community! We look forward to getting to know you.
