Make it with scrappy fabrics for a vintage look, or fussy-cut your patches for a co-ordinated look. Traditionally made using the English Paper Piecing method, it will take you 2-3 evenings to complete this project. MATERIALS - Scrap fabrics for the hexagons, half-hexagons and pentagons – or a selection of 5-9 different fabrics with suitable motifs for fussy cutting – see diagram 1 for placement of the fabric choices or repeat fabrics - .25m (1/4yd) each of lining fabric and fusible pellon or medium weight interfacing - template plastic for the base and 3 pattern pieces - 2 pieces 2½” wide x 13”long fabric for the draw-string casing - 2 pieces, 32” long, of 1/8” thick cording or ribbon for the draw-string - 4, 5/8” pre-cut hexagon papers for finishing the ends of cording or ribbon ** - 40, 1½” pre-cut hexagon papers and 6, 1½” pre-cut pentagon papers ** NOTE: **pre-cut “DILLY-BAG” papers for this project are available from: www.brigittegiblinquilts.com Mark the centre of cutting templates in order to fussy-cut motifs METHOD – OUTER SHELL Make fabric-cutting templates, including ½” seam allowance, for the 3 pattern pieces A, B and C. Refer to English Paper Piecing and fussy-cutting instructions on Brigitte Giblin’s blog at: www.brigittegiblinsfeatheringthenest.blogspot.com. Also refer to diagram 1 for fabric placement. Cut 3 hexagon papers in half, point to point. Cut fabrics and cover 37 hexagon papers, 6 half hexagon papers and 6 pentagon papers. Baste through the folds of the seam allowance on the wrong side, without stitching through the papers, so that papers can be removed without un-picking the basting (this keeps the seam allowances flat). Starting in the centre of the base, and working in rounds, whip-stitch the shapes together to make the outer shell of the bag. See Diagram 1 and Photo 1 HEXAGON DILLY-BAG made by Brigitte Giblin DIDIAGAGRAMRAM 1 1 copyright: www.brigittegiblinquilts.com Round 1: 6 hexagons around the centre. TIP: don’t remove these papers. They can be left in situ for a firmer base. Round 2: 6 hexagons and 6 pentagons. TIP: Start this round with a pentagon POINTING DOWN towards the centre, and sewn BETWEEN 2 hexagons on Round 1 – check placement on the diagram. Round 3: 12 hexagons – once this round is complete, remove papers from round 2 Round 4: 12 hexagons – once this round is complete, remove papers from round 3 Round 5: 6 half-hexagons (in between 6 top hexagons) to make the top edge even. Remove remainder of papers from the last 2 rounds. Photo 1 – working in rounds Photo 2 – assembly LINING Fold the bag flat, so that there is a whole hexagon on each end, in preparation for the lining and casing. The centre of each side should be a half-hexagon. Make two ¼” turnings towards the wrong side on each end of the casing fabric. Check that the length corre- sponds to the top edge of the hexagons, between the two side hexagons. Hem the turning by hand or machine. Press in half along the length, wrong sides together. Join the two paper pattern pieces “D” together to make one whole circle, including the seam allowance. Fuse together the lining fabric and pellon or interfacing and from this, cut: - a rectangle 9” high x 28” long, and - a 9” diameter circle – pattern piece “D” WITH seam allowance Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, and sew by hand or machine along the 9” sides of the rectangle, ½” from the raw edges, to make a tube. Mark each quarter of the tube (every 6 ¾”), and each quarter of the circle. Pin the quarters together. Baste if necessary, and then stitch through all thicknesses, ½” from the raw edges. Sew together with the circle underneath and make small tucks on the tube if necessary. Make a generous ½” turning on the top edge of the lining, towards the wrong side and baste in place. ASSEMBLY - see photo 2 From the template plastic cut an 8” diameter circle for the base – see pattern piece “D”, WITHOUT the ½” seam allowance. (if you feel the plastic base is too big, trim 1/8th” off the edge all around) Insert the plastic base into the bottom of the bag, and then position the lining inside outer shell. The top edges of the outer shell and lin- ing should meet. Press the top edges. Insert the folded casing between the two layers. Pin and then baste in place – leaving the ‘one whole-hexagon’ gap on each side. Machine topstitch all around, close to the edge and ensuring all layers are secured. HEXAGON DILLY-BAG STEP BY STEP ASSEMBLY Sew the bag base to the sides of the linin g make the casing fo r r the draw-string stitch on the top edge to enclose the casing DRAW-STRING Cover 4, 5/8th” hexagon papers with fabric. Do not remove the papers. Using a safety pin or bodkin, thread one cord through the casing openings, starting and finishing on right side. Thread the other cord starting and finishing on the left side. Stitch through the raw ends of the cord to secure them together, and then enclose each end within two hexagons by whip stitching around the edges of the hexagons. A C HEXAGON DILLY-BAG pattern pieces. Use 1-1/2” hexagon and pentagon pre-cut papers. Use a generous 3/8” to 1/2” seam allowance when cutting fabrics.
