Assrnlcr The results are given of a chemical, microchemical and x-ray investigation of vanadium minerals from a new locality in west Africa-Minas do Lueca in Angola, together with comparative data for similar minerals from other localities. A rapid and simple technique of microchemical analysis has been devised which enables accurate discrimination to be made between different members of the descloizite (Zn)pb(VO)OH-mottramite (Cu)Pb(VO)OH isomorphous series. A description is given of the mode of occurrence and origin of the vanadium minerals at the Lueca Mine, and of the associated tarbuttite ZnTPO4OHand volborthite Cu:(VOJz.3HrO. INrnooucrrow In the courseof a study of a new vanadium depositat Minas do Lueca in Angola, PortugueseWest Africa, it was found that there was a wide variation in color and physical propertiesof the ,,descloizite,'-typemin- eralsoccurring in the deposit.Reference to Iiterature showedthat there is still some confusionin the nomenclatureof these minerals and that the x-ray powder diffraction data have not been fully established for a representativenumber of members of the isomorphousseries to which thesevanadates belong. For paragenesisstudies of the vanadium min- eralizationat Lueca, it was found necessaryto make preciseidentifica- tion of membersof the seriespresent in the ore. For this purpose,com- plete chemicalanalysis was found to be too tediousin view of the large number of specimensinvolved, and *-ray powder photography too in- definite;consequently a rapid microchemicaltechnique has beendevised which enablesprecise discrimination to be made between members of the descloizite-mottramiteseries. Cupurc,qr, ColrposrrroN oF THE DBscr,orzrrB Gnoup The "descloizite"-type minerals may be expressedby the formula (Zn,Cu)Pb(VO4)OH,and a complete isomorphousseries exists between the zinc and copper end-members-descloiziteand mottramite respec- tively. The combined content of ZnO and CuO approximates 20/s throughout the series,and it has been proposedthat descloiziteshould refer to that half of the seriesin which the ZnO content exceeds10/6, and mottramite to the other half of the seriesin which the cuo conrenr is greater than 10/6. The chemical analysesof six members of the series are given in Table 1. It is suggestedthat memberswith more than 18/ ZnO should be referred to as d,escloizite,those with between IO and 18/6 763 764 ANTHONY P. MILLMAN ZnO as cuprian d.escloizite,those with between 2 and 10/6 ZnO a"szinctan mottram'ite, and those with less that 2/s ZnO as mottramite. Minor amountsof manganeseand iron are known to substitutefor (Zn,Cu), and arsenic,phosphorus and molybdenum substitute for vanadium. Tlsrr 1. X-Rev lxvnsrrc.crroN The publishedr-ray powder data for the descloiziteseries are incom- piete.The first attempt to clarify the nomenclaturewas by Bannisterand Hey (1933) and they concluded that the powder data for descloizite, cupro-descloizite,psittacinite, mottramite, childite, eusynchiteand de- chenite were identical and that they could all be expressedby the for- mula (Zn,Cu)Pb(VOa)OH. This conclusionwas modified recently by Kingsbury and Hartley (1956) who showedthat although the spacings for descloiziteand moltramiteare similarabove 1.652 A, therewere sig- nificant difierencesin smallerspacings. Guillemin (1956)has also shown this to be the casefor the pure synthetic end-members;Guillemin has synthesizedtwo forms of mottramite of different structure and cell-size, and has proposedthe terminology of d-mottramite and B-mottramite, the B-form having slight excessof adsorbedwater. There is closeagreement in the spacingsand relative line intensitiesbetween 5.0 A and 1.86A (lines 1-26) but substantialdifferences occur in the lower spacings,especially between 1.60 A and 1.50A llitt.r 30-34), 1.41A and 1.33A (lines36-41), and 1.25A to t.OgA llioes 42 52).The mottramite half of the seriesappears to have considerablyfewer reflectionsat spac- ings lower than 1.38 A ltine 37).
