Freeman and Company 1 Eukaryotic nuclear genomes • Each species has characteristic chromosome number • Genes are segments of nuclear chromosomes • Ploidy refers to number of complete sets of chromosomes –haploid (1n): one complete set of genes – diploid (2n) – polyploid (≥3n) • In diploids, chromosomes come in homologous pairs (homologs) In humans, somatic cells have – structurally similar 2n = 46 chromosomes. – same sequence of genes – may contain different alleles Chapter 2: Genes and genomes © 2002 by W. Freeman and Company Overview • Each species has a uniquely fundamental set of genetic information, its genome. • The genome is composed of one or more DNA molecules, each organized as a chromosome. • The prokaryotic genomes are mostly single circular chromosomes. • Eukaryotic genomes consist of one or two sets of linear chromosomes confined to the nucleus. • A gene is a segment of DNA that is transcribed into a functional RNA molecule. • Introns interrupt many eukaryote genes. • Viral genomes consist of either DNA or RNA.
