He was Director of The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, from 1986 - 2000, following eight years as Deputy Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Publications include works on Lord Leighton, Sir Edwin Landseer, F. X. Winterhalter and others, as well as several works on Sargent.
