I hope you are enjoying your summer. With the 2018 Supreme Convention quickly approaching, I want to make sure I provide you with some important updates/reminders. Membership It’s time to pay your 2018 membership dues! Please submit your dues to your local chapter as soon as possible. Membership dues help keep our organization up and running by allowing for better communication and enabling us to offer activities and fellowship. Your support is vital. Please consider paying for yourself and other family mem- bers. It’s a small price to pay to be part of a family that cares for each other and the community. As a reminder to the chapters, instead of submitting paper receipts please email your membership info in an Excel file to Supreme Treasurer, Katerina Mavrophilipos at [email protected]. Please include emails in the spread- sheet! Per capita checks ($20 per member), and paper receipts should be mailed to: Katerina Mavrophilipos, 2 Southerly Ct., Unit 407, Towson, MD 21286 Convention Delegate and Chapter Officer Forms The Supreme Lodge emailed and mailed the Convention Delegate and Chapter Officer forms to each of the Chapter Presidents. Please complete the forms for your Chapter, and return them to our National Secretary, Cathy Pande- ladis. It is important to return these forms as soon as possible, to ensure that all necessary Chapter and Delegate information is available by the start of the convention. Washington D.C. Convention I want to extend a big congratulation to the Lefkas Chapter for their diligent work on organizing what is sure to be a great convention. Please note that the convention hotel is currently sold out. Rooms are at a premium, so if you have a room on hold but do not plan on using it, please contact Chairman George Moratis so that he can transfer those reservations over to fellow Ikarians who are looking to attend. Lastly, while I know Washington D.C. will offer many venues for you to explore, if you are a delegate please make sure to attend some of the meetings. Participating as a delegate allows you to chime in on whatever topic you deem important and to have a voice in key decisions of the Brotherhood, including planning and initiatives for the upcom- ing year. And chapters, please make sure you submit your per capita before the convention officially begins. Cultural Enrichment Program Great news! To help preserve our Icarian culture, up to $3,000 has been budgeted by the Pan-Icarian Foundation for 2018 to fund one or several mini grants relating to the Icarian diaspora or the island of Ikaria (i.e. the culture, history, art etc.). An application form can be found online and in this issue. For those that are interested, it should be filled out and returned by September 1, 2018 to our mini-grant chair Ellene Tratras Contis at [email protected] Ikapia Magazine Page 3 Pan Icarian Brotherhood of America “Icaros” Spring 2018 SUPREME PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (CONTINUED) 2018 Membership Drive Winner I want to thank all the Chapters that participated in our first Membership Drive.Your commitment and spirit were outstanding. This was the first time in many years that we were able to get more than 1,000 dues submitted so early in the year. Once again, thank you. That said, I’m happy to announce that the winner of the Membership Drive Con- test is…Toronto Chapter Nisos Ikaria #21! Congratulations for submitting the greatest percentage of dues based on last year’s membership numbers. Job well done. For all the other Chapters that didn’t win, please do not feel discouraged. Next year, you will have another chance to win. Pan-Icarian Volunteer Project A big thank you to everyone, especially our Youth, who participated in our second Pan-Icarian volunteer campaign in the month of June. We are lucky to have individuals such as yourselves who are willing to give their time, skill set and talents for a great cause. Together we helped make a big difference to individuals and the communities we live in. I want you to know just how much we appreciate all the work you all did to make good things happen. Goodbye but not Farewell This is my last presidential newsletter, and I want you to know that all our success this year as a Brotherhood has been a true team effort. There are many people that I would like to thank. First, I want to recognize my fellow Supreme Lodge members for all their hard work and dedication: Supreme Vice President Damianos Skaros, Supreme Secretary Cathy Pandeladis, Supreme Treasurer Katerina Mavrophilipos, Supreme Counselor Maria Vardaros. I would also like to thank our District Governors: Chrissa Lefes, George Karnavas, Steve Stratakos, Evangelos Fragos, Alexandra Katsas, Nick Skaros, and our Youth Governor Erica Aivaliotis. I also want to thank the Foundation Board for working closely with the Lodge this past year for the common good of our Brotherhood. I also want to recognize Ikaria Magzine editor Mary Achedaftey Deschamps, Scholarship Chairman James Lakerdas and Webmaster Dean Tripodes. Lastly, I want to thank all the Chapter officers and members of the Brotherhood for all their hard work and dedica- tion throughout the year. The effort and commitment that you provide is exactly why our great organization contin- ues to thrive! It has been a true honor and pleasure to serve you these past two years. You placed a great deal of trust in me by electing me to be your Supreme President, and for that I am forever grateful. Thank you for your time. I look forward to seeing you soon at the Convention! Fraternally yours, George Paralemos Supreme President Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America Page 4 Ikapia Magazine Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America “Icaros” Ikarian Alzheimer’s Project Maria Shriver in partnership with NBC has asked the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America to be part of an amazing Alzheimer’s Project that will focus on Ikarians and their families after immigrating to the USA. We need your help to collect some data! Please contact us if anyone from your family who is of Ikarian descent has been or had been diagnosed with any form of Alzheimer’s Disease while living in America. • Anyone in your family from any generation • Either born here or Ikaria • Living in America while diagnosed • Recently diagnosed or further progressed • Alive or no longer with us Please contact Katerina Mavrophilipos at [email protected] or (410) 218-5191 We know this is a sensitive and personal subject for many families, but we appreciate any way you can help us in furthering the research on this devastating disease.
